Frankincense the GoTo Essential Oil!

In recent years I have become obsessed with the scent of the essential Oil, Frankincense and after reading this sweet little book, I now know why! The book talks strictly about Frankincense, its history, the making of it, and its use as an outstanding essential oil... It is truly an amazing essential oil and really does smell Divine... I often wondered why it was given to Jesus by the three Wise Men at the time of his birth... I now know why. This book was valuable in explaining its use and its importance to humanity... It is truly the GoTo essential oil of the times... and from what I have read in the book, of all time... Get the book if you Love Frankincense, it is worth it!

Good book. Informative but not referenced well.

Rosenthal writes in the notes for page 188 " ...Christian Arabs have the highest income and education level of all Israelis." I did a search on this and all sources say that Christian Arabs have the highest income among Arabs, but are second to Jews. Two references for this are 1) Decomposing Wage Gaps Between Ethnic Groups: The Case of Israel by Raviv, and 2) Wikipedia, Arab citizens of Israel, Christians, "They have also the highest median household income among Arab citizens of Israel and second highest median household income among the Israeli ethno-religious groups."

Good book but a bit loose with the facts.

Required Reading for Isreal Visit

I just returned from Isreal and wished I had read this prior. While in Isreal I met Jewish secular and orthodox people, Druze, Arab Christians and Muslims, Bedouins, and Baha'i. I have often wondered about the different Jewish practices and this will definitely educate as well as open your heart to the many different peoples who inhabit this amazing and complicated country. Especially interesting was the section on the Ethiopian Jews and their perseverance and isolation for thousands of years and the talents that they have gifted to their new found country. It is an amazing vibrant read even if you are not visiting this wonderful country but will have felt that you were there, meeting it's rich embroidery of people and the sacrifices they have made to settle here.

A Must-Read Book on the People and Nationof Modern Isreal

I took this book with me on a tour of Israel and found it to be a fascinating companion. The best sections are on the Jewish people themselves, both Sabras and those making Aliyah. The later sections on minority groups such as Druze, etc are less interesting and seem to be simply filling out a survey for form's sake. Having this book with me as I traveled a met the Israelis themselves was one of life's great adventures.

About the Author

Wallace R. Blischke obtained a B.S. in Mathematics from Elmhurst College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Cornell University. His early employment included aerospace and consulting firms. He joined the faculty of the University of Southern California in 1972, where he taught in the School of Business for 27 years. Dr. Blischke is currently Professor Emeritus, Marshall School of Business, USC, and is a private consultant specializing in data analysis, experimental design, sampling, reliability, quality assurance, warranty, and litigation support. He has over 50 publications in statistics, reliability, warranty analysis, and related areas, has co-authored or edited five books (three on warranty and two on reliability), and has presented papers and lectures at numerous conferences and universities on five continents. Dr. Blischke is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and has served as Associate Editor of several scientific journals.

M. Rezaul Karim obtained Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science degrees in Statistics from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan. For the last sixteen years he has been working in the Department of Statistics at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and is currently at the rank of professor. His research fields of interest are: quality and reliability analysis, warranty claim analysis, industrial statistics, bio-statistics, and statistical computing. He has considerable research experience in his fields, has published 15 papers in international refereed journals, and presented 20 papers at various conferences and workshops in seven countries. He has written a few chapters on warranty claims data analysis in such books as the Handbook of Statistics and the Encyclopedia of Statistics in Quality and Reliability. He served as an assistant editor of the International Journal of Statistical Sciences for two years and worked as a committee member of several international conferences and workshops on warranty and reliability modeling and analysis. He is a member of five professional associations.

D. N. Prabhakar Murthy obtained B.E. (Electrical Engineering) and M.E. (Applied Electronics) degrees from Jabalpur University and the Indian Institute of Science in India, and M.S. and Ph.D. (Applied Mathematics) degrees from Harvard University. He is currently Professor Emeritus at The University of Queensland. In the past he has held visiting academic appointments at several universities in the USA, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

Pra Murthy is the author or co-author of 165 journal papers and has presented over 150 papers at various conferences around the world. He is the co-author of six books, and the co-editor of three books and several conference proceedings. He has run short courses on various topics of reliability and warranty around the world and is on the editorial boards of eight international journals.

So far this book has been very interesting. I have just started doing this warranty analysis at work so this has helped bring a lot of things in perspective. It is technical at times with equations but looking forward to being able to do a better job by understanding more.

This collection of short stories is a great read. The cover is one of the colorful and creative covers of the year.

Let's face it--I love short story collections. Some of the best, most enduring works of fiction arrive in the form of the short story, and there are a couple of real jewels in this book.

The book opens with "Sharp Sword Dull Sword." This particular tale was inspired by being told a contest he was thinking about entering did NOT want any tales involving talking swords. What emerged from his rebellion is a witty little send-up of every D&D game ever played. If you are looking for snark, this tale is just what you ordered!

My personal favorite in this volume is "Disconnected." In this tale, Schopfer voyages into literary, cerebral science fiction, and does it well. This is a thinking person's tale, and was rightfully selected as a finalist in PNWA's annual literary contest. In this tale he explores the place where modern technology and modern society merge.

As a bonus, he gives us a preview of "Into the North," the sequel to "The Beast Hunter." All the common sense and cold perseverance that Kelton Moore displayed in The Beast Hunter is back in full force in this snippet.

I highly recommend this to everyone who enjoys good speculative fiction.

When I first heard about this book I admit I was a little nervous as while some of the scenes from his other books were funny they were not really funny books and humor can be very subjective. I am happy to say that I was very surprised that this was an excellent book and Mr Schopfer shows again the breath of his writing abilities. As a fantasy type guy I enjoyed the stories with a fantasy background but was even more surprised about how much I enjoyed the other stories (If you can read Lumpy without laughing out loud you need to have your soul checked :-) ) Overall if you want a great short story read this is a book for you. I also think it would be a true crime if some of the stories like taking a dijin to court are not expanded into their own book of short stories

This is a great mix of short stories that will keep you entertained and wanting more. Like the title says this collection has many different kinds of stories that hit several different favorite genres of mine. I don't want to spoil the stories but they are varied from a genie in a courtroom, to a story about a group of shouldn't be adventurous. Like Schopfer's other titles these short stories have great characters that come to life and his writing is entertaining and easy to read. This collection is also a great look at where Lindsay has come from as a writer and what influences his other writings. If you haven't read Lindsay before this is a great starting point before you get into his other novels.

A Remarkable Personal Remembrance of 25 Years in the Closet & Finding Your Way Out.

Denial is a remarkable personal remembrance of Jonathan Rauch's internal struggles growing up a closeted gay man.
It chronicles his early childhood recognition of a secret difference, an unknowable monster in his psyche that must be hidden from both himself and the world. He describes the elaborate structure of denials, the closet, which he created and maintained until he was 25 to preserve his secret and his sanity.

Rauch documents with startling honesty and insight how the decades he spent denying his nature to himself stunted his relationships with others and distorted his understanding of the world. Spoiler alert: there is a happy ending. He also describes the process of self-discovery that let him open the closet door to become an authentic and loving self.

I think that many straight people view the coming out process differently from what it usually is. They may imagine an adolescent suddenly discovering (or choosing) to be gay, and that coming out is simply deciding when to let everyone else in on the secret. A lot of blog comments on Jason Collins recent revelations seem to support this distorted view.

Gay people are not born in closets. They painstakingly build them themselves, board by board and layer by layer as a defense against a world that would mock and humiliate them. Discovering that you are "different" and "not normal" is a frightening paralyzing thing for a kid. Many, like Rauch, become convinced that they are not only different; but are unique and alone in their struggle with a hidden monster. LGBT suicide rates underline the seriousness of this struggle.

Jonathan Rauch is 1st a great reporter and 2nd a remarkably honest and self aware man. This short book describes the coming out experience with greater detail, self-knowledge and compassion than I have ever seen. Its not a long read. But categorizing Denial as a "Kindle Single" does not do justice to the amazing amount of thought and self analysis that was apparent on every page. Many of the thoughts John describes growing up I too felt but had long forgotten, or had imagined were mine alone. The difficulty he had fighting through the "kudzu" of self-denial to accept his authentic self is an experience that many gay people will relate to.

Rauch does not claim that his own journey is the same as that of all or any other gays. It certainly differed in significant ways from mine. Each of our paths is our own. However, I am confident that reading John's story will provide any GLBT person who struggles with coming out with increased self-awareness and a greater confidence that they are not alone and that there are pathways to the light.

The book is also a good choice for families, friends and loved ones who want to better understand what gay people who struggle with the closet may be going through and how to better support them.

I hope that our nation's rapid cultural change and increasing support for GLBT youth will someday make this personal memoir just an interesting relic of the past. We're not there yet. Thank you Jonathan for telling this most personal, honest and insightful story.

Revelatory

As a straight man reading Jonathan Rauch's remarkable book I have to admit that at times I was very uncomfortable. But I'm so glad I read it. I've never encountered this degree of intelligent, self aware, and brutally honest personal narrative which at the same time is amazingly enlightening. The perspective it provides on one man's harrowing journey to knowing himself is a unique and valuable contribution. I can't imagine anyone who reads this book ever imagining that there is any "choice" in the matter. Overall an interesting and very engaging read. I highly recommend it.

A Provocative and Affirming Read

After reading an excerpt I was 'hooked' so I downloaded this e-novella. Beautifully and intelligently written, with breathtaking clarity surrounding the experience of the struggle many of us have experienced coming to terms with our sexuality. I was particularly touched by the emphasis on sexuality as an experience of love and its relationship to one's soul/spirituality. This construct, I believe is often unappreciated or under-appreciated by individuals who perceive homosexuality to be just something relating to a sex act. Bravo!
