The Beauty of Seven

I am SO glad I had a few free hours this morning because once I started this book I HAD to finish it...
and then I read it all. Again.
It's not just that I am a faerietale lover since my childhood - or that I love faerietale adaptations that take the story to a whole new level. (I will always relate to the Snow White story in a deeper way after reading Seven.)
It's not even the author's personal bravery in insisting that all creatures are meant to be - and ARE beautiful - the way they truly are - if they have the courage to be. Whether it be a witch, a faerie, a lesbian, or a tree, that you are meant to be, this story makes you feel that it's OK. The acceptance of ALL creatures the author shows is a beautiful thing. Not many of us are so open to all creatures, even ones different from them.
*I'm thinking especially here of how much love and beauty it shows in a writer and her story, to have villainous characters end up being so glorious, kind, and wise - when they are true to themselves! And I'm thinking of how the heroines were not painted as perfect but with weaknesses of their own - AND EACH ONE GREW SO MUCH IN THE STORY. *
And it's not just that the writer writes like a master of the craft who's written dozens of books when it's her debut novel -
It's all these things that make me love the story, but most of all it is just the fact that the storyteller made the story so real to me. I was there, saw it all, tasted it all, and it's a part of me now.
Some stories become a part of your mind and heart for a little while - and some manage in an almost undefinable way to become part of your psyche for always.

Clever, lovely, and hugely atmospheric

As a fan of her wife, Sarah Diemer/Elora Bishop's work, I was thrilled to see Jennifer Diemer publish a short story of her own. SEVEN was brilliant in so many ways. It was richly atmospheric with the sense of 'epic love' that all good fairy tales should deliver. Her take on Snow White was clever and original, while calling up enough familiar elements to be satisfying. I will never be able to see the story of my youth in the same way--it feels like the marred remembrances of a story lost to time, the true events finally, and faithfully, recorded in this novella.
It was enchanting, moving, magical, and mysterious. A very, very compelling read.

A Familiar Character but a New Story

This is a completely new take on the story of Snow White. Originally I thought it was going to mimic the orginal fairytale. It doesn't, which is not a bad thing. The story is intersting and stands in its own right and it has it's own bit of intrigue as you try to figure out the husband's evil plot.
I would recommend this to anyone, it feels like a fairytale that could be enjoyed by anyone. It just happens that the two characters who fall in love are women.
