Beautiful designs
By Susanne
Let me say I love Joan Elliot. And these designs are beautiful. That being said however, I do wish that there were actual pictures of the finished pieces instead of drawings. The drawings are nice and beautifully done however when you're sewing you look at a finished piece. With the drawings you miss the details-this shimmering of the metallic threads, the beads, etc. Also some of the fractional markings are a bit small- even with my glasses on I still needed a magnifying glass.

not bad, but could be better
By kimberely
After getting her "bewitching cross stitch" book and loving it my husband bought me this one for christmas. The book contains five full size patterns and four small patterns, but the only pattern shown in completion is the one on the cover; the rest are shown in pattern form. While the patterns look pretty there's no way of telling what they'll look like finished until after I do them. So for the most part a good book but it could have been better made.

Joan Elliott is a class act
By Jane in Milwaukee
I really appreciate Joan Elliott as a designer for cross stitch. She's been doing this for about 4 decades, has contributed to numerous cross stitch magazines in the UK and US and has authored other books in addition to this one including:

Joan Elliott's Native American Cross Stitch
A Cross Stitcher's Oriental Odyssey
Bewitching Cross Stitch
Christmas Cross-Stitch Treasures

I especially like the first two. Along with the reviewed book, it shows the deft and respectful handling of female characters you don't always see in cross stitch books. Just look at all the images above**: the fairies are not just flitting around like butterflies (well, except the Butterfly Fairy) but they are proactive, take charge leaders: one is teaching a child fairy how to read, another is riding a fierce dragon like she means business and another is avidly tending her garden. The Fairy Queen is busy...er...reigning. The final 4 little Childhood Magic motifs would be cute for a little one's room. I like Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum's angels in the Lavender & Lace publications but I'm thinking of tackling the dragon one here. There are 31 colors of floss (I like that it shows both Anchor and DMC...I use the latter) and the stitch count is 165 by 219. This would be as pretty and certainly less daunting as one of Teresa Wentzler's designs. Nice book.
