Marjorie Hurt Jones, R.N., has more than 20 years experience in health and nutrition. She has devoted her life to helping people cope with food allergies. She is the author of Superfoods: Allergy Recipes and Cooking for the Health of It, as well as co-author of the Yeast Connection Cookbook. An educator and frequent speaker, she published the newsletter Mastering Food Allergies for more than 10 years and now manages the website of the same name. She is president of Mast Enterprises, Inc., a company dedicated to helping people recover from food allergies.

Oat & Barley Scones! Stockpile soy Milk!!!

I think that this woman is a FRAUD, a LIAR and a Piss-Poor cookbook writer - - this SUPPOSEDLY Allergen Free self-Help Book is LOADED with ALLERGENS and Allergen-loaded recipes and affirmations.

That being said, after I crossed out and rewrote TOO MUCH of her misinformation, I would recommend this book for one counseling those new to allergen free living. What she gets right is Fabulous, but what she gets wrong is DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. The cover proclaims No Soy, No Gluten, etc. but then the inside is FILLED with gluten and soy recipes and affirmations. I thought I read where she proclaimed that gluten was found in spelt, wheat, rye, barley and oats. Where the HELL was her publisher in all of this? Who was her proofreader and did she even have one? This is HIGH irresponsibility within the allergen free community where, apparently anyone and everyone jumps on the bandwagon and writes nonsense purveyed as expert information. SHAME ON HER, her publisher and ALL OF THEM! I suggest one buy this, cross out and rewrite over the errors and then use this strange book. It does have SOME good info so it is somewhat useful. Enough so that I ordered a second copy for someone I am schooling in allergen free living; this will be my example to her of how to recognize and protect herself from charlatans and how to recognize dangerous information.

Title is misleading

I was just diagnosed as allergic to all of the allergens that this book is supposed to address and this book was recommended to me by an acquaintance as the go to book for a person with such allergies. Due to her review I took her advice and ordered the book right away.

The title of the book is THE ALLERGY SELF HELP COOKBOOK- OVER 350 NATURAL FOOD RECIPES, FREE OF ALL COMMON FOOD ALLRGENS. The cover then lists the allergens this book is free of including corn, egg, gluten, milk, sugar, soy, wheat, and yeast. From the cover/ title of this book, I assumed that all the recipes would be free of these allergens but that is not the case. On the first page of the book the beginning of a paragraph states to STOCK UP ON SOY MILK. Wait a minute, I thought this book was to be soy free and instead it is giving advice to stock up on this and that many people can tolerate it. As I perused the chapter on recipes I noticed that she uses oats and spelt, both of which contain gluten yet the cover also says the book is free of recipes that contain gluten.

The book does contain some good recipes and gives good information on the characteristics of different types of alternative flours. It falls very short of its title, however, and the recipes contain many of the allergens that the title promises it is free of. For a newbie, to eating allergen free, this could be problematic if you don't know exactly what foods contain what you are not supposed to eat (ex. that oats can be cross contaminated and contain gluten and that spelt contains gluten). A huge improvement for this book (besides changing the title to be more accurate) would be for each recipe to contain icons to let the reader know of which allergens said recipe is free of.

Overall, as someone who is very versed in natural foods and who has spent time eating gluten and sugar free before finding out about other allergies, I am unthrilled by this book and though it has good information feel that an overhaul of how it is presented would make it much more user friendly.

Not free from EVERYTHING

My sister was diagnosed with MS last year and her diet had to change significantly. No gluten, yeast, sugar, meat, eggs, the list goes on and on. Purchased this for her to help her in her struggle to find things to eat. The front of the book states that all the recipes are free from these allergens, but inside there are some recipes that included eggs and other things that it stated the recipes were "free" from. Maybe it was my mistake, but I was a little disappointed. I am giving it 3 stars still because there are a ton of recipes that she CAN use in the book, I was just upset that now she has to carefully read each one to make sure she can consume all the ingredients. With MS, a full time job, and 3 kids I was hoping to make her life a little less stressful. Wishful thinking I suppose.
