About the Author
Michael Sheridan was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1965. He lived in Alaska in his early twenties and returned to Ireland where he studied psychology at Dublin City University, and studied Dream Interpretation under the veteran, George Rhatigan.

His decades of work and exploration in the spiritual field are as a result of a spontaneous awakening he experienced at age 27, and the ripples he's experienced ever since. He's been interviewed countless times on National TV and radio because of his expertise in dreams. He moved to Seattle in 2011 and currently hosts the radio show, "So, You Think You're Awake?" on KKNW.�

He lives with his wife, Sandy, two daughters, Heidi and Julie, and two grandsons, Billie (4) and Thomas (2). Billie and Thomas sometimes allow him to relax and watch TV very late in the evening. He works, writes, and prepares for his radio show from home. Life is good!

Excellent Book on Dreams and much more!

As someone who was always uncertain about my life purpose - a little "fuzzy" around my purpose on the planet - I am grateful to Michael for writing this excellent book. Through learning how to look at my dreams I gained more of an insight into my own nature and purpose and indeed my many wonderful gifts and how to develop them. It covers much more than dreams too - a great introduction to spirituality in general.

Not your typical dream dictionary--with the same old stuff. Michaels interpretation resonated with me. I followed up with him actually interpreting my dreams through his web-site. Amazing clarity--through my dreams he was able to identify a situation for which very few in my life have any knowledge. Highly recommended!

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly: these are adjectives which describe my reading of Dr. Glenn Siniscalchi’s effort to restore apologetics to its proper place in Catholic life.

Siniscalchi’s book is wonderfully succinct, the 274 easy-to-read pages covering major aspects of Thomistic thought on belief in God, the significant contribution which Christianity brought to a pagan world (that every human life is worthy of respect), the importance of using one’s intellect to affirm faith, and the rationality of belief in a benevolent God Who wishes not only to communicate with His creatures, but also to offer them eternal life.

Thoroughly footnoted with a twelve-page bibliography to encourage further reading, Siniscalchi’s book is scholarly yet designed for popular reading, as the divisions into five parts and fifteen chapters suggest. Thus, the book is a one-stop course in a variety of disciplines. The cultural significance of Catholic Christianity—specifically of the crucial role that Catholic institutions such as charities, hospitals, and universities have played over the past two millennia—is simply inspiring and makes one proud to be part of a universal faith based, not on terror or pessimism, but love and hope.

Catholic Christians of any rite (Byzantine, Melkite, Maronite, Roman, etc.) have always appreciated the inherent beauty of the faith. What impresses the reader on finishing Siniscalchi’s book is how logical the Catholic faith is. Siniscalchi destroys atheist claims skillfully and with grace; after all, as he mentions several times, apologetics involves not merely pointing out another’s errors, but doing so in an appropriate and Christ-like manner.

Siniscalchi is a master of identifying logical fallacies in atheist or heterodox opinions, and he addresses those errors in thinking without engaging in ad hominem attacks. The reader can easily understand the deep philosophical ideas being presented because Siniscalchi’s style is, as affirmed above, cogent and lucid, flowing smoothly from one idea to the next (the meaning of the adjective “mellifluous”).
It is no wonder, then, that virtually every page of my copy has been marked with an annotation of something important to remember, something worthy of future discussion, or something simply interesting to investigate in the future.

Two areas in the book’s production need to be addressed. The second edition should correct some annoying typographic errors. Also, although the content of the fifteen chapters is evident from their titles, an index should be created to assist the reader in locating specific terms quickly.

These minor matters aside, I highly recommend Siniscalchi’s work for all, especially high school and college students. In fact, I can see how this book can be the basis for a series of broadcasts on EWTN, videos on YouTube, or a masterly online course (one chapter each week in a fifteen-week course). Siniscalchi should pursue these opportunities to promote his excellent work.

Don't have time to read St. Thomas Aquinas’ massive works? Can’t get to the entire body of Vatican II documents? Don’t have the energy or the eyesight to plow through the Catholic Encyclopedia? Read Siniscalchi’s book instead. A subtitle for the book could be “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Faith but Were Afraid to Ask.”

Important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship

Dr. Siniscalchi's book is an important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship. In Retrieving Apologetics, he argues convincingly for a post-Vatican II role for apologetics, using both papal encyclicals and the documents of the council itself. Vatican II did not obviate the need for apologetics, as some Catholics mistakenly think. Rather, Vatican II opened up new apologetic methods. The council, while breaking the monopoly of the Neo-Scholastic classical method on Catholic apologetics, nevertheless affirmed the classical method's validity in its own sphere of competence. This argument comprises the first part of Siniscalchi's book.

The rest of the book is devoted to updating that classical method to meet the challenges of today. It is here where Siniscalchi particularly shines. Before one can begin to make the case for the truth of the Catholic faith, Siniscalchi rightly argues, apologists must first defend the notion of objective truth against the claims of postmodern relativism. He then updates several Thomistic arguments for God's existence, defending them against the particular challenges of today. He corrects many of the Neo-Scholastic errors in their defense of Christianity - rather than arguing for the truth of Christianity based on an outdated notion of historical reliability of the Gospels, Siniscalchi argues that, based on the totality of the evidence (accepted as evidence by both Catholics and non-believers alike), the hypothesis that Christianity is true outstrips the claims of rival hypotheses that would see Christianity as false. Siniscalchi also develops the relevance of the Catholic faith, especially the via empirica, as a method for defending the truth of Catholicism.

Perhaps the best thing about Retrieving Apologetics, and Sinischalchi's work as a whole, is that, while his passion for the subject is evident, he is unflinchingly fair and charitable. As a scholar, he embodies the Vatican II vision that sees ecumenical dialogue and apologetics as not incompatible. As Siniscalchi himself points out, authentic dialogue requires its participants to seek the truth, not gloss over differences.

Katie Malone quit her job and packed up her little Vermont house. The past few years had been tough and the past few months, having been separated from her brother, Conner, her only family, had been awful. In fact, she'd been feeling so alone, she stopped herself just moments before signing on to an online dating service.

But her watershed moment came when she began to have high hopes for a romantic relationship with her boss, the sweetest pediatric dentist who ever lived and a man who had never even kissed her. And guess what? There was a logical reason he hadn't—he was gay. She was the last person he wanted to kiss.

It was high time she forgot about men and worked on bolstering her independent spirit with a return to California. One of her twins, five-year-old Andy, said something that nearly drove an arrow through her heart and caused her to realize the whole family needed a fresh start.

She was packing up a box to ship ahead to California when Andy asked, "Do we have to move in the dark again?"

She was stunned. Speechless. Here she had been thinking about kisses and loneliness while her boys were worried about fleeing in the dark of night to some strange, unknown place. A place even farther from family than they were now.

She clutched her little boy close and said, "No, sweetheart! I'm taking you and Mitch to Uncle Conner."

Andy and Mitch were a matched set, five-year-old identical twins. Mitch overheard this and came running. "Uncle Conner?" he asked.

"Yes," she said, suddenly clear on what she had in front of her. She had to get her family together, make sure her boys felt safe and secure. "Right after a little side trip. How does Disney World sound?"

They started jumping for joy, screaming "Yay!" and "Cool!" And then the celebration dissolved to the floor and into a wrestling match. Like usual.

She rolled her eyes and continued packing up.

Last winter her brother had had a devastating experience that had become a family crisis. A man had been murdered behind their family-owned hardware store and Conner called the police at once. He became the only witness in a capital murder case. Shortly after the arrest was made, the hardware store was burned to the ground and a threat was left on Conner's voice mail. This led the D.A. to decide it was in the best interest of their family to separate them. Katie and her boys were spirited off to Vermont for their own protection, about as far from Sacramento as she could get and still stay in the country, while Conner was hidden away in a tiny mountain town in Northern California.

Now it was over. The suspect in the murder had been killed before he could stand trial, Conner was no longer a witness and their family had escaped danger. Now they could get about the business of healing and bonding.

And Conner had met someone in Virgin River, Leslie, a woman he loved. He'd settled in to make a life with her.

Katie would enjoy surprising her brother, but they'd long ago established the habit of talking every day. Conner talked to the boys, if only briefly, at least every other day—the closest thing to a father they had. There was no way she could conceal her travel plans. If Conner didn't suspect, the boys would certainly tell all.

"Summer is almost here," she told Conner. "It's almost June, we're all free to roam and move around now that there's no threat. I have to get my boys back to some kind of stable life. They need you, Conner. I'd like to spend the summer in Virgin River with you, if that's okay. I want to rent my own place, of course, but the boys should be near you."

"I'll come and get you," Conner immediately offered.

"No," she said flatly. "I'm taking the boys on vacation, just the three of us. We've earned it. We're going to Disney World for a few days. I'll have the car shipped from there, then we'll fly to Sacramento and I'll drive up to Virgin River—it's only a few hours. And I love scenic drives."

"I'll meet you in Sacramento," he said.

She took a breath. Conner's overprotectiveness had intensified after their parents' deaths. He was always there for her and she adored him for it, but he verged on bossy and sometimes she had to take a firm hand with him. "No. I'm not a child. I'm thirty-two and very competent. And I want to spend some time with my kids. They've been on shaky ground since the move and we need some fun time together."

"I only want to help," he said.

"And I love you for it. But I'm going to do this my way."

And he backed off! "All right, fair enough."

Katie was momentarily shocked into silence. "Wow," she finally said. "Who are you and what have you done with my big brother?"

"Very funny."

"Although I have the utmost respect for you, I give all the credit for this change to Leslie. Tell her I owe her."

When Katie had escaped to Vermont in March, she had left behind her minivan with the license plate that could identify her. It was to be sold and Conner had arranged for a late-model Lincoln Navigator SUV to be waiting for her in Vermont—a mammoth vehicle that she could barely park. As any carpooling mother might, she had grieved her minivan—it was light and easy to handle and felt like an extension of her body. But she came to quickly love the big, gas-guzzling SUV. She felt like queen of the road—invulnerable; she could see over everything and everyone. She looked forward to some time on the road for reflection, to consider her options. The act of seeing the miles vanish in the rear-view mirror was a good way to leave the past behind and welcome a new beginning.

It didn't take Katie long to get out of town. She had UPS pick up her boxes on Monday, phoned the school and arranged to have the boys' kindergarten records scanned and emailed to her, invited the landlord over to check the condition of the house, and asked her neighbor to come over and help herself to the perishables that would otherwise be thrown out. She arranged to have the Lincoln picked up in Orlando and moved to Sacramento while she and the boys did a little Disney. She packed not only clothes, but the cooler and picnic basket. Her tool belt, which was pink and had been given to her by her late husband, Charlie, went with her everywhere. Armed with portable DVD players and movies, iPads and rechargers, she loaded her monster SUV and headed south.

They got off to a great start, but after a few hours the boys started to wiggle and squabble and complain. She stopped for the bathroom for one when the other one didn't have to go and fifteen minutes down the road, had to stop again for the second one. They picnicked at rest stops every few hours and she ran them around to tire them out, though the only one who seemed tired was Katie. She repaired a malfunctioning DVD player, set up some snacks and loaded them back up to hit the road again.

She couldn't help but wonder how parents did this sort of thing ten, twenty, thirty years ago before portable movies and iPad games. How did they manage without fifth-wheel-size cars with pull-down consoles that served as tables to hold games and refreshments? Without cars that, like cruise ships, had individual heating and air-conditioning thermostats? How did the pioneer mothers manage? Did they even have duct tape back then?

Most women, at times like this, would be reduced to self-pity because they were left with these high maintenance, energetic boys, but Katie just wasn't that kind of woman. She hated self-pity. She did, however, wish Charlie could see them, experience them.

Katie met and married Charlie when she was twenty-six. They had a romantic, devoted, passion-charged relationship, but it had been too short. He was a Green Beret—Army Special Forces. When she was pregnant with the boys, he deployed to Afghanistan where he was killed before they were born.

How she wished he knew them now. When they weren't in trouble they were so funny. She imagined they were like their father had been as a child; they certainly resembled him physically. They were large for their ages, rambunctious, competitive, bright, a little short-tempered and possessive. They both had a strong sentimental streak. They still needed maternal cuddling regularly and they loved all animals, even the tiniest ones. They tried to cover up their tears during Disney movies like Bambi. If one of them got scared, the other propped him up and reassured and vice versa. When they were forced together, like in the backseat of the car, they wanted space. When they were forced apart, they wanted to be together. She wondered if they'd ever take individual showers.

And just as she'd always griped at Charlie for never closing the bathroom door, she still longed for a little solitary bathroom time. The boys had been in her bubble, no matter what she was doing, since they could crawl. She could barely have a bath without company in the past five years.

So her life wasn't always easy. Was theirs? They didn't seem to realize they didn't have the average family life—they had a mom and no dad, but they had Uncle Conner. She showed them the pictures of their dad and told them, all the time, how excited he had been to see them. But then he'd gone to the angels…. He was a hero who'd gone to the angels…

So Disney World was a good idea. They'd all earned it.

Although the books are well written and I've enjoyed getting to know the characters and their wonderful town

I'm up to the 20th book in the Virgin River series. They're my bedtime stories. Although the books are well written and I've enjoyed getting to know the characters and their wonderful town, when it's not bedtime, I read much more substantial story lines. Therefore I am not giving more than 3 stars for any of these books. They are all pretty much the same but with different scenarios and character love stories. Easy reading before sleep.

Biker Hunk Meets Widowed Mom

A widowed mom of two small boys meets a biker hunky pilot and ex-teen actor who is trying to save his flying charter business. Again, Robyn Carr can weave a tale around almost any character and his/her occupation, drop them into the town of Virgin River, and make romance happen. Although "Redwood Bend" isn't as good as some of her other books in the series, it was a good read for all the romantics who enjoy Robyn Carr's stories.

One of my favorites in the Virgin River Series!

I have loved the Virgin River series since I started with Virgin River 20 some books ago and this one was one of my favorites. Dylan is one of my favorite Heros - a hot misguided child star all grown up to be the man his grandmother could be proud of - after one of his best friends overdosed in their teens. Dylan rides a Harley into Virgin River with one of R Carrs other great heros Walt from Summer in Sonoma. It was great to see him again - the lovable tough looking Harley motorcycle shop owner who found love in another of her books.

Robyn Carr cranks out some of the best heros I've read. This one kept me hooked from beginning to end.

About the Author
George Rodman is professor and chair of the Department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, where he has taught for 30 years. His research interests include the role of humor in human communication and the effect of communication technology on psychological well-being.

Rodman is the author, coauthor, and editor of several books, including ten editions of Understanding Human Communication (with Ron Adler, Oxford University Press), four editions of Mass Media Issues (Science Research Associates and Kendall/Hunt), Making Sense of Media (Allyn & Bacon, 2001, and four books on public speaking, including The New Public Speaker (Harcourt Brace, 1997), a book that features the role of public speaking in the media-information age. He has written for newspapers, magazines, journals, film, television, radio, and multimedia programs. He has appeared as both host and guest on local television programs. While in graduate school, he was a winner on The Dating Game on ABC.

Rodman has been listed i Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in Education. He serves as the faculty adviser to The Excelsior, one of a pair of competing campus newspapers that were named third in the nation by the 2005 Princeton Review of America's Best Colleges. In 2005 he was nmaed the Bernard H. Stern Professor of Humor and was awarded the Brooklyn College Award for Excellence in College Citizenship. He has been voted "Favorite Teacher" by graduating seniors several times, most recently in 2008.

In a way, Rodman is genetically predisposed to an interest in mass media. His grandmother was a first cousin to, and grew up with, Hollywood mogul Cecil B. DeMille. His grandfather was a personal lab assistant to Thomas Edison, and was later president of the Radio Manufacturers Association. His father's start-up business ventures included importing European recording equipment, printing, and computer manufacturing.

Rodman lives in Garden City, New York, with his wife Linda and three children: Jennifer, Alexandra, and Dean.

Practical experience meshes with academic theory

I was privileged to review the proofs of the first edition of this book prior to its first publication (by a different publisher) while in graduate school. One reason I was asked to do so was from my perspective of over 20 years in the radio and television industries, mostly on the network level. Another was I had met the author while applying to Brooklyn College for graduate school, although I eventually went somewhere else. The review process helped me to get inside Rodman's mind and see what he was trying to accomplish, and - hopefully, through my remarks in the review reports - help guide that process in a positive way.

Several years later, I began teaching college myself and selected the text and accompanying workbook for my basic introductory course to mass media. I found that the three-fold approach in each chapter provided not only the encyclopedic knowledge necessary, but with the meshing of industry examples and discussion of controversies, the solid underpinnings of a good understanding of the mass media students need.

I've used this book in two editions and in two colleges and find it well received for the most part, with a few who don't quite "get it" of course, and many of my students have said that combined with my lecture style of using the book to reinforce stories from my professional world experience, it helped them focus on a field within mass communications that really interested them.

I really don't think you could go wrong with picking George Rodman's book for a class. Of the many, many texts for an introductory media course, this stands out with the best of them!

good, with notable exceptions

bought this for a college course in Mass Media. Good basics, however, it is a 2009 edition, and some of the info should have been updated - for example it lists "hotwired" (now WIRED) as an example of online media - but hotwired stopped publishing in 2006. Also, the index is kinda spotty, meaning that some key terms are not even listed, and others are listed as being on a certain page, but they are not. I expect a bit more rigorous fact checking and editing from a textbook. Also at least one passage so far seems to have been directly lifted from a 10 year old NYT article without attribution - naughty naughty. I tried to leave feedback on their online "student companion" website, but the feedback feature has been disabled. Since this is a required text, I had to buy it, but if I was teaching the course I might shop around for a better text.

Clean and neat. Just as described. The text itself is a little ADD in style. I find I have to really make sure I haven't missed anything. There are lots of sidebars and content in boxes and things like that.

In recent years I have become obsessed with the scent of the essential Oil, Frankincense and after reading this sweet little book, I now know why! The book talks strictly about Frankincense, its history, the making of it, and its use as an outstanding essential oil... It is truly an amazing essential oil and really does smell Divine... I often wondered why it was given to Jesus by the three Wise Men at the time of his birth... I now know why. This book was valuable in explaining its use and its importance to humanity... It is truly the GoTo essential oil of the times... and from what I have read in the book, of all time... Get the book if you Love Frankincense, it is worth it!

Good book. Informative but not referenced well.

Rosenthal writes in the notes for page 188 " ...Christian Arabs have the highest income and education level of all Israelis." I did a search on this and all sources say that Christian Arabs have the highest income among Arabs, but are second to Jews. Two references for this are 1) Decomposing Wage Gaps Between Ethnic Groups: The Case of Israel by Raviv, and 2) Wikipedia, Arab citizens of Israel, Christians, "They have also the highest median household income among Arab citizens of Israel and second highest median household income among the Israeli ethno-religious groups."

Good book but a bit loose with the facts.

Required Reading for Isreal Visit

I just returned from Isreal and wished I had read this prior. While in Isreal I met Jewish secular and orthodox people, Druze, Arab Christians and Muslims, Bedouins, and Baha'i. I have often wondered about the different Jewish practices and this will definitely educate as well as open your heart to the many different peoples who inhabit this amazing and complicated country. Especially interesting was the section on the Ethiopian Jews and their perseverance and isolation for thousands of years and the talents that they have gifted to their new found country. It is an amazing vibrant read even if you are not visiting this wonderful country but will have felt that you were there, meeting it's rich embroidery of people and the sacrifices they have made to settle here.

A Must-Read Book on the People and Nationof Modern Isreal

I took this book with me on a tour of Israel and found it to be a fascinating companion. The best sections are on the Jewish people themselves, both Sabras and those making Aliyah. The later sections on minority groups such as Druze, etc are less interesting and seem to be simply filling out a survey for form's sake. Having this book with me as I traveled a met the Israelis themselves was one of life's great adventures.

About the Author

Wallace R. Blischke obtained a B.S. in Mathematics from Elmhurst College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Cornell University. His early employment included aerospace and consulting firms. He joined the faculty of the University of Southern California in 1972, where he taught in the School of Business for 27 years. Dr. Blischke is currently Professor Emeritus, Marshall School of Business, USC, and is a private consultant specializing in data analysis, experimental design, sampling, reliability, quality assurance, warranty, and litigation support. He has over 50 publications in statistics, reliability, warranty analysis, and related areas, has co-authored or edited five books (three on warranty and two on reliability), and has presented papers and lectures at numerous conferences and universities on five continents. Dr. Blischke is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and has served as Associate Editor of several scientific journals.

M. Rezaul Karim obtained Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science degrees in Statistics from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan. For the last sixteen years he has been working in the Department of Statistics at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and is currently at the rank of professor. His research fields of interest are: quality and reliability analysis, warranty claim analysis, industrial statistics, bio-statistics, and statistical computing. He has considerable research experience in his fields, has published 15 papers in international refereed journals, and presented 20 papers at various conferences and workshops in seven countries. He has written a few chapters on warranty claims data analysis in such books as the Handbook of Statistics and the Encyclopedia of Statistics in Quality and Reliability. He served as an assistant editor of the International Journal of Statistical Sciences for two years and worked as a committee member of several international conferences and workshops on warranty and reliability modeling and analysis. He is a member of five professional associations.

D. N. Prabhakar Murthy obtained B.E. (Electrical Engineering) and M.E. (Applied Electronics) degrees from Jabalpur University and the Indian Institute of Science in India, and M.S. and Ph.D. (Applied Mathematics) degrees from Harvard University. He is currently Professor Emeritus at The University of Queensland. In the past he has held visiting academic appointments at several universities in the USA, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

Pra Murthy is the author or co-author of 165 journal papers and has presented over 150 papers at various conferences around the world. He is the co-author of six books, and the co-editor of three books and several conference proceedings. He has run short courses on various topics of reliability and warranty around the world and is on the editorial boards of eight international journals.

Warranty data collection

So far this book has been very interesting. I have just started doing this warranty analysis at work so this has helped bring a lot of things in perspective. It is technical at times with equations but looking forward to being able to do a better job by understanding more.
