The science fiction world of BUMPED meets X-Men: First Class

First off, I just have to say that this title is perfect. It invokes the song "You Found Me" by The Fray and that is exactly what Penny was before she was found by Ben, Zellie, Avery, and the rest of the gang "Lost and insecure, you found me, lying on the floor."

That's where Penny was, well lying on the side of the highway, but I'm not about to give any spoilers.

This book is told from the dual POV of Penny, Wyatt, and you get to see a little bit of Ben and the old gang from the Zellie trilogy and what they've been up to. What Stacey does VERY well is give each character their own unique voice without going overboard. She can write an angsty teenage girl that is so real I felt like I was actually in a teen girl's head. The same could be said for Wyatt, he wasn't an overbearing, hypersexualized male voice but sounded like a normal teen boy, that of course did think about the hot pink haired new girl.

I highly recommend this book for fans of the Zellie Wells trilogy and for fans of young adult science fiction books. It has the futuristic technology of BUMPED and that same school for kids with special abilities vibe as X-Men First Class. If you are a fan of either of those, you should definitely check out this book!

A Great Start to a New Series

Found is another great book from Stacey Wallace Benefiel. I haven't read the Zellie Wells Trilogy, which is a connected series that takes place earlier, and was still sucked into this story right away and read it in two days. So you don't have to have read the Zellie books to get a kick out of Penny. This character's life seems to be one big dilemma after another, but at least she has the power to rewind time.

Brief Summary:

Penny Black has been on the streets most of her life and she was fine with that. When she wakes up in an juvenile detention its pretty normal but when two men step up as her long lost “uncles” she is thrust into their lives where they tell her that she has the power to rewind time and try and prevent disasters.

Wyatt Adams is put on duty to be Penny’s Lookout, he is excited and intrigued by Penny but will do anything to prove that he can be just as good as his older siblings at his job. To everyone Penny is a huge deal because she has powers that surpass everyone and that only makes it more difficult to prove people of his abilities.

My Take on the Book:

So … Apparently there was a series before this one? Well obviously that train sailed.

However I would recommend that you read the Zellie Wells trilogy before you read this one, considering this series is a companion series, because I bet it will make so much more sense to you than it would if you started off with this series. I’ll admit I was a bit confused for the first few chapters but it was all good after that, the author did a pretty good job at keeping the reader up to pace with the storyline before this one.

Even if it was understanding I still was confused towards the end with the powers and I don’t know what else I’ll probably be reading the Zellie Wells series soon and then re read this book.

I enjoyed the author’s storyline with the whole rewinding time and the ones who have powers have triggers and just all of it! It was a whole different genre kind of read than the books I usually read and I liked it a lot and wouldn’t mind reading from something of that again. What was cool was that it was based in the future and there was this scene where someone was talking on their iPhone 23? Pretty legit.

The Characters:

Penny Black: So Penny was that girl who really didn’t give a crap about anything and went with the flow. I liked that she was a little different from the other normal heroines in the regular YA books such as --
1) She is not ‘unattractive’ as the girls think they are
2) She has piercing
3) She wears ‘goth’ clothing
4) She is NOT a virgin and doesn’t care.

Did I mention she was very badass? Yup.

Wyatt Adams: Wyatt was a very good Lookout for Penny and had everything in his best interests for her plus *cough* *cough* other things … *laugh nervously*

I really liked Wyatt, he was a strong character that tried to do anything to keep Penny safe and to let the elders know that he can and will do his job. He is very smart and even though he isn’t gifted like the others he is still just as talented and he can keep up despite what others say.

I also liked the fact about how he tried to keep his distance from Penny, well the way both of them tried to fight the attraction, it was rather cute in a way. He was just too sweet and kind, its not everyday you get a guy like Wyatt Adams(:

Me Ranting:

So this book was supposed to be a New Adult book and from what I have heard about NA is that they are mainly meant for the older teens and early 20 year olds because it involves more language and sex than YA but it really wasn’t. It was more Sci-Fi than NA which is perfectly fine but I don’t think they should have labeled it NA. There was sex towards the end but nothing got down to hot and heavy.

An odd thing I had found while reading is the way the people talk and yes I know its set in the future but it sounds a bit kid to me I guess.

Such as the words ‘buttwrinkle’ and ‘dicknob’ -- they felt a bit childish and weird but hey I guess that’s gonna be us soon. Also the characters used the words ‘bueno’ and ‘chido’ which I automatically knew as Spanish but they used it so many times that I had gotten confused about what they mean.

‘Bueno’ is used at good which is also its English translation and also can be used as ‘ok’ or hello and so on. ‘Chido’ was the one that had me re reading the passages and trying to figure out what it meant and it took me quite awhile … It is basically slang for cool or alright like if someone says ‘She’s chido,’ it means she’s cool or she’s alright. Get it?

I’m probably going to continue the rest of the series because honestly at the end it became really confusing (to me anyways) and I’m hoping to have it all figured out later in the series!

Overall I like the book and the character’s. Soon when the second book comes out, hopefully I will have money to buy it and solve all my weird questions like …

THE ENDING?! How in the hell did she and up with him? I was beyond pissed off and I seriously cannot wait til the second because I NEED to know what happened and I think I will scream loudly to the heavens until I do!!!

An excellent introduction to piracy worldwide.

Philip Gosse has written a thorough overview of worldwide piracy; concentrating, of course, in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, but including the Far East. Even three cases of female pirates are covered. The subject is described both in breadth and depth, with many "sea stories" included. The only drawback is that some famous pirates, like Jean Lafitte, receive little coverage.

One of the better books on piracy

This modern reprint of a 1932 classic is an invaluable history of piracy. This book, along with David Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" and Daniel Defoe's "A General History of the Pyrates" (Defoe was writing as Captain Johnson), are the best volumes on piracy I have yet to read. Gosse's history is lively and comprehensive.

The author begins, “To write a complete history of piracy from its earliest days would be an impossible undertaking….What the following pages attempt to do is to show what conditions, geographical and social, preceded the rise of piracy, to trace its periodical rises and declines, its forms and fortunes, to depict the more outstanding members of its profession, and finally to show how national organization, backed by the steamship and the telegraph, brought it to an end.” The book has seventeen chapters, plus an Epilogue, divided into four main sections: “The Barbary Corsairs,” including the Barbarossas; “The Pirates of the North,” such as the Vikings, Hanseatics, and English Corsairs; “The Pirates of the West,” such as the Buccaneers of North America; and “The Pirates of the East,” from Africa, India, Arabia, Japan, China, and the Malay Archipelago.

Author Philip Gosse is identified as “an eminent authority on pirate lore and literature.” I picked The History of Piracy up in “The Pirates of the Caribbean” gift shop when we visited Disney World last year. It is well written, and the stories are told in a lively, informative, and comprehensive fashion. A few curse words are used, primarily in quotations. Even three cases of female pirates are covered. Some famous pirates, such as Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and Captain William Kidd are given their due, but others like Jean Lafitte are barely mentioned. The book will not appeal to everyone, but anybody interested in pirate history, or history in general for that matter, will enjoy it. There are seven Appendices, quoting documents from the days of “The Classical Pirates” of ancient Greece and Rome to a 1929 newspaper article on “Modern Chinese Pirates.” Also found in Dover’s reprint are seventeen black-and-white illustrations and four maps from the volume’s original publication.

These words are called synonyms. The word synonym comes from Ancient Greek syn meaning 'with' and onoma meaning 'name'. But can two words really have exactly the same meaning? Fromkin et al. does not agree with this definition, he states that no two words ever have exactly the same meaning even if they are synonyms (2003:181). Therefore synonyms are words carrying nearly similar meanings and whose usage is bound to the context. This means that one has to be careful in choosing a word; it might not carry the same meaning as the writer intended. Translation often causes irritation about which of the words fits better in a specific sentence. Especially the non-native speakers have a lot of problems in deciding which of the words is more suitable to use in a certain context and they have to face the question if any one of these words is suitable in any context. But also native speaker are not always sure about the correct use of two synonymous words. Appointment and engagement are two words with a similar sense to the common mind and share many semantic properties. In the thesaurus both words are said to be synonymous and when applying the definition above, we may agree with it. But do appointment and engagement really have exactly the same meaning? This book intends to provide grounds for further research on electronic system level design (ESL), by means of open-source artifacts and tools, thereby stimulating the unconstrained deployment of new concepts, tools, and methodologies. It devises ESL design from the pragmatic perspective of a SystemC-based representation, by showing how to build and how to use ESL languages, models and tools.

This work is based on the successful experience acquired with the conception of the architecture description language (ADL) ArchC, the development of its underlying tool suite, and the building of its platform modeling infrastructure. With more than 10,000 accesses per year since 2004, the dissemination of ArchC models has reached not only students in need of proper infrastructure to develop their research projects, but also commercial designers in need of processor models to build virtual platforms using SystemC.
