The least readable book I have ever had the misfortune to ha

I had to read this book for a class and it is without a doubt the excruciating example of how not to commit words to paper I have ever encountered. While I had the option of selling the book back to the university I kept it because I had underlined several passages that are simply stupefying. Literally, you can read a paragraph over and over and just not piece together what the author is trying to say. On occasion the intent will shine through and you will be amazed to realize that the paragraph you just fought your way through could have been expressed in a sentence. In this respect the book is remarkable.
In the years since I first encountered this book I've used to it help fall asleep and more recently to tease my girlfriend thanks to its appalling lack of coherence. If you want a bad gift this book might serve, but more likely the recipient will not get through more then a page or two. I'd say this book is best used as a mild threat or something solid to use to support objects, like a TV or whatever else you need elevated.

Concurrent Programming in Java, 2nd Edition surveys a wide field of research in parallelism and concurrency and shows how to do more with multithreading in Java with dozens of patterns and design tips. Written for the advanced Java developer, this book offers a comprehensive tour of leading-edge thinking about parallel coding processes.

Within the dozens of techniques and tips offered here, this book accomplishes at least two goals. About the Author

Doug Lea is one of the foremost experts on object-oriented technology and software reuse. He has been doing collaborative research with Sun Labs for more than five years. Lea is Professor of Computer Science at SUNY Oswego, Co-director of the Software Engineering Lab at the New York Center for Advanced Technology in Computer Applications, and Adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Syracuse University. In addition, he co-authored the book, Object-Oriented System Development (Addison-Wesley, 1993). He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire.

Everything you need to know about concurrency in Java

Concurrent programming is fraught with peril. It's much more complex than sequential programming in every meaningful way from specification to unit testing. But if you want to do it right, meaning balancing liveness with safety for efficient and robust multi-threaded applications, you need Doug Lea's "Concurrent Programming in Java". Especially if you need to design an extensible framework with concurrency; well-known examples of such frameworks incluce Swing, most of java.net, and just about every aspect of J2EE.
Lea provides an intense introduction at the level of an advanced undergraduate course. It's fairly academic in tone, because he takes the time to provide thorough definitions and detailed examples. As a former academic who now designs and programs for a living, this is just what I was looking for. But don't buy this book expecting a cookbook of code to cut and paste. It's much more about providing you the fundamental tools to design your own concurrent classes, applications and frameworks.
Lea presupposes the user is fluent in Java, knows a bit about concurrent programming patterns involving mutexes, semaphores, etc, and is familiar with the basic object-oriented design patterns. If you're not up to speed in these areas, the path I followed was reading the following:
* Lewis's "Threads Primer" (warning: it's C/unix-based),
* Gosling and Joy's "Java Programming Language",
* Bloch's "Effective Java", and
* Gamma et al.'s "Design Patterns".
Even if you don't buy this book, consider using Lea's concurrent.util package available from his web site. It provides solid implementations of everything from simple mutexes to concurrent read-single write wrappers for Java collections (Sun's own wrappers simply synchronize all methods, which suffers reduced liveness compared to CRSW designs). And it's both elegantly designed and thoroughly javadoc-ed.
The first edition was great, and I've just finished reading the second edition cover to cover and it has taken my understanding of concurrent design to a new level. Just be warned that this book's not for novices or hobbyists; it's for programmers who need to design the guts of concurrent systems the "right" way and then implement them in Java, especially for extensible frameworks.

Really informative. Seems to offer a "2 in 1" deal where it provides information on both concurrency and patterns. Not a light read as was the case before but the information is worth the effort.

Read It Slowly

I bought CPJ because I had a concurrency problem at hand (writing a an efficient cancelable timer class) and had hoped to find a quick solution here. But what! Doug Lea is not in a hurry and takes his time to introduce and explain all the nitty-gritty of Java concurrency. I thought it wasn't necessary to learn about all this, but now I agree that you need to see the greater picture before you go off and implement even small solutions. Reading this book leaves me wiser than ever before and confident I could attack almost any concurrency problem in Java! (And it took me two weeks to solve my problem, when I reached page 200 or so, and it was piece of cake then.)

Much More than a Horse Story

I'm not much of a horse story girl. Aside from some chapter books I read with my daughter when she was in 3rd grade about little girls with ponies, I haven't read a horse book since Black Beauty when I was in 3rd grade myself. Still, the cover of this book is alluring, and I'd heard a lot about it, so I gave it a shot. So glad I did. It is a great summer camp story. It's got all the things you would expect of an all girls' equestrian camp, snotty rich girls, that cool odd ball, and of course the new girl who is so darned curious. On top of all of that there is this mystery about a girl who went missing 5 years ago and is presumed dead, except Brynlei keeps seeing someone in the woods that looks like her. Is it really the girl? Is it a ghost? She is determined to find out. I was going to give this book 4 stars for just being a good, solid YA mystery, but then I got to the final 3rd of the book where the mystery finally unravels. From that point on the drama and tension had me on pins and needles to the very end. I wanted to know how it was all going to turn out and if everyone that I came to love so much in this book were going to be okay. So... 5 stars for hooking me in. A nice clean read, perfect for ages 12 and up. Highly recommend! And double recommend if you love horses.

A fun twist you will never see coming!

This book was a fun, easy read. Great for teens or adults. As a non-rider, I didn't understand a lot of the horse terminology that was heavily included throughout the book, but it was interesting and even a little educational. The ending well…. wow. Didn't see it coming and it kept twisting even after I thought I had it all figured out! I love a good mystery that I don't quickly guess the ending of. I will definitely recommend.

When I pick up a book to read, I want to be engrossed in the story and carried away. I hope the storyline will take me someplace else, grab my attention, and keep it. It’s even better when I learn something new or venture away from my normal routine in reading. Trail of Secrets was all of this for me. I don’t usually read mysteries, but this book was very enjoyable and it took me to another place. I almost felt like I was at the riding camp and knew these characters. I found myself thinking about them during the days when I was not even reading the book! The author painted such a detailed picture of the characters’ personalities that you could really relate to the interactions between them. As others have mentioned, I knew nothing about riding and haven’t been around horses much…but I found the equestrian language and tactics intriguing. It was not over-emphasized, just introduced enough to seem very credible and add to the authenticity. It gave a glimpse into the sport/hobby of these girls and the knowledge they need to ride at that level. Anyways, the mystery aspect of the book was fun and a little wild – there are unexpected twists. This is a great novel for teens or adults, and a good book to use even to introduce a young adult to mystery. I recommend it and I would look forward to reading another novel by this author if a sequel follows! Really, four and a half stars.

A good place to find descriptions of genuinely obscure drugs

This book contains references to some drugs that I couldn't find anywhere else. Drugs that are no longer in common use, that are used exclusively outside the US, or that have toxicity levels that are normally unacceptable may still find a listing in Martindale. The index is very thorough. I had only two complaints: 1) I don't understand why some drugs information is dropped when new editions come out -- I would rather see the book simply grow, rather than sometimes requiring access to older editions, and 2) it doesn't present molecular structures (sigh). Still, the opportunity to find information that is otherwise simply unavailable (try to find dosing schedules for potassium bromide elsewhere, to pick an example) outweighs any complaints.

We have been promoting this book for Fifi for weeks now and I finally got to read it and let me tell you I was hooked from the go. I got to talk to Fifi for the first 60% of the book and as I told her I had a girl crush on Julia real quick. I loved her sense of humor and her free spirit. Then when she headed to Chicago, WOW!!! Hello hot artist and hot curator.

Julia was a free lance writer and had been corresponding via text and email with the curator she would be interviewing for her next piece. She imagined him to be an old guy with a bow tie and all that. Ha! She was so wrong!

When Mr. Curator gives her instructions to meet him at a warehouse so he can show her something she is in for one helluva surprise. As soon as she walks off the lift she is met with a very hot male, who she assumes is the curator, and instructed to strip and get onto the bed.

Julia does as she’s told and then later when Mr. Curator walks through the door asking the artist if the woman he was to meet had shown up Julia realized that he meant her. I was really laughing hard over this, but my laughter died a quick death when these two alpha males took things to a whole new level.

There was just something about Pierce (Mr. Curator) that I couldn’t figure out, but the more I learned about Emerson (sexy artist) the more I loved him. This book was a quick and easy read and so much more than just a hot read there is true love to be found here and I wanted more.

Well I got a little more with the extra little short story to be found at the end of the book and I won’t tell who is was about, but it was about either Emerson or Pierce and it was HOT as well and just what that man needed.

I have to give Reclining Nude in Chicago 5 stars and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author!!

Hot yummy read!!

Julia is a reporter who is meeting an art curator, Pierce, to interview him for her article. She ends up walking into a loft where an artist, Emerson< is waiting for his model, who is late. He is very abrupt and demands her to strip, climb on the bed and not speak. She does as she is told. It isn't until Pierce shows up and she realizes the mistake that she gets uncomfortable. Both men take their time making her feel totally comfortable with them. She enjoys her time with them both and is sad to leave.
She realizes that she has feelings for Emerson and enjoys a few days that he spends at her home. When she returns to the art museum for the Gala she see's Emerson with another woman and thinks that she has been replaced.
Has she? Was their time together just good fun for him? Read it to see how it ends, you wont be disappointed. Some HOT sex scene's too!!!

Oh my freaking gosh. This novella is such a spicy read, you won’t want to miss out. It is intended for audiences 18 and over, though.
In this novella, Julia is a freelance artist that occasionally writes for a magazine. Julia has had the worst luck trying to find a man. She’s dated, or well, spent the night with, several men, but none of them do it for her. That is, until she meets two men on an assignment for the magazine she works for.
First, there’s Pierce. A museum curator who loves the same artist she does. He’s sexy, smart, and wears those black-framed glasses like no other man. When she spoke with him for the first time over the phone, she believed he was an old, yet fun, man. She was wrong, so, so wrong. When she made her trip to Chicago, he gave her the address to a loft where they were supposed to meet. This is where she meets Emerson.
Emerson is tall, big, and oh so devastatingly gorgeous. He’s quiet, commanding, and dominates a room with just his presence. An ex-wrestler turned artist, he paints just like the artist Julia idolizes. His big hands can do wonders with a small paintbrush, creating masterpieces that blew Julia away.
Imagine Julia’s shock when Pierce walked in. Pierce just laughed it off as if he was used to walking into rooms with naked women being painted. After Julia conducts her interview with Pierce, things start to get heated up. These fires stay heated for the few days she’s in Chicago. One of these men, though, has been causing her heart to flutter. She struggles with distance, since she is native to Los Angeles and he is in Chicago. The man feels the same and does whatever he can to be with her. He is determined to make it work and so is she.
This novella should come with a warning: keep your husband, boyfriend, or B.O.B within reach while reading! Great job, Fifi, on this amazing novella! I gave this novella four stars. The unique story line flowed together nicely, but I was never emotionally invested in the story. If you’re looking for a quick, quirky read, then this is for you!

and I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book

I couldn't believe it when I saw that this cookbook was available as a "new" book (authentic reproduction) again. I received it - probably as a birthday gift? I don't remember - when I was a young child, about 50 years ago. I have always been a cookbook reader, and I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book. So when I saw that it was available again, I eagerly bought a copy for the sake of nostalgia.

As an object of nostalgia, I would rate it 5 stars. It looks exactly like the original, although if you're looking carefully, you can tell that the cover is from a "photo of a photo," as the image isn't quite as crisp as an original would be. Also, the green glossy material used on the inside of the front & back covers is not something that was in the original However, everything else about the book is a perfect reproduction.

As a 21st-century cookbook for children to use, I'd probably give it only 3 stars. There is a lot about cooking that has changed in the 60 years since this book was first published:
* Our understanding of nutrition has changed significantly
* We encounter a greater variety of ingredients, especially fresh produce, in our stores
* Our food landscape has been enriched by many contributions from nearly every continent and every corner of the earth (I had definitely never heard of hummus or chiles rellenos when I used to read this book on lazy summer afternoons), and
* Rather than seeing canned/highly processed foods as exciting miracles of modern culinary technology, we now see them as the less healthy and less tasty versions of food that they are.

This cookbook is definitely rooted in the food styles, tastes and knowledge of its mid-20th-century era.

That being said, this was a very, VERY good children's cookbook for its era. The recipes are creative, attractive, and often whimsical. There is a LOT of information for a budding cook who doesn't want to just learn a particular recipe, but actually wants to learn how to cook. It piques the interest through extras like the illustrations (including many gorgeous full-page color glossy photos of finished recipes) and the sidebar tips from the 12 kids who were the "Junior Testers" of all the recipes in the book.

So, bottom line:
1. If you are an adult who was in love with this book as a kid, buy it.
2. If you are thinking of buying it for a child in your life today, I would say go ahead and buy it for its instructional value in the basics of cooking, but give the child a more contemporary children's cookbook at the same time.

wrong cookbook

This add shows red pie cookbook! I did not receive a red pie cookbook. I received the next version! The reason I want the red pie?? I recieved the red pie version as a wedding gift in 1973. I have used the cookbook with my children and it is very worn and falling apart. I will keep this book because it has most of the same recipes, but IT IS NOT THE BOOK ADVERTISED!! You can see the difference in the photos!

Received the book. It is in remarkable condition for being nearly 30 years old.
The cover of the book I received matches the photo on the listing....but not the description. Be forewarned, this book does NOT contain the beautiful photos described in the review. In fact it contains on a very few black and "white" (the book is old) illustrations. Other than feeling a tad bit ripped off that the book is not as described, it is in great, readable condition and appears to have all of it's pages intact. Overall, especially for the price, I am pleased with my purchase. However, the Review/Description should be amended to match this particular book so as not to deceive customers.
UPDATE:
Just received my other book which is the one in the photo for this listing. It is the 1976 (1969 copyright) Betty Crocker Cookbook with the Pie diagram on the front. This book is in remarkable condition considering it's older than I am. Very happy with this purchase. This one receives 5 stars. The seller sent exactly what was ordered.
Apparently several different books are lumped under this one photo/listing/description.
