Richard S. Weiss is a Senior Lecturer in South Asian religions at Victoria University (Wellington, New Zealand). In his "Recipes for Immortality," Weiss illuminates the continuing success of traditional healers in the face of Western medicine's global spread by examining the ways in which practitioners of traditional Siddha medicine in Tamil Nadu enlist the confidence, support and patronage of their patients. This is a book about the interactivity and interdependency of tradition, faith, cultural identity and the sentiments of nationhood. The author presents a fascinating in-depth study of this traditional system of knowledge, which serves the medical needs of millions of Indians.

While biomedicine may (or may not) alleviate a patient's physical discomfort, Siddha physicians offer their charges a great deal beyond simple cure: these include affiliation to a timeless and ethnically pure community, culture and civilization, founded on the conception of a long-lost technologically advanced Tamil utopia, coupled with the notion of racial greatness stolen from a now marginalized people. They along with their ideological fellow-travelers - promoters of Tamil civilization, nationhood and culture - speak of an antediluvian golden age of Tamil civilization and of traditional medicine, a medicine so sophisticated even in ancient times as to offer its consumers the promise of resistance to all disease and - at least by implication - of immortality.

Weiss utilizes the tools of social analysis to qualify and detail the success of Siddha practitioners, documenting how they have successfully acquired authority and credibility in a context of medical choice while illuminating their lives, training, vocations, and aspirations for the future. Weiss also documents the challenges they face in the context of medical choice afforded by contemporary society, both from a "rational" Western biomedicine that claims universal legitimacy and efficacy, and also from rival traditional medical lineages, including Ayurveda and Unani medicine.

This book is a broad and deep study of Siddha medicine, the least understood of the medical 'systems' of India, written with great craft and clarity about immeasurably ancient traditions competing for social respectability as well as scientific credibility in emergent postmodern India, exploring the tense nexus between secrecy and revelation, magic and rationality, and loss and restoration. Weiss ends the volume with a look at traditional medicine in a larger context, and illustrates the ways that Siddha doctors, despite recent trends toward the globalization of Western biomedicine and the emergence of a global medical monoculture, reflect the wider political and religious dimensions of medical discourse in modern society. "Recipes for Immortality" proves that medical authority is based not only on physical effectiveness and the replicability of results, but also on imaginative processes that relate to conceptions of personal and group identity, history, utopian promise and the expectation of healing.

Impeccable quality

I read Edgar Allen Poe poems in school but none like this. The illustrations and the way the book is put together is just lovely. I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. The stories themselves are of course wonderful as well but what else would you expect from good old Edgar? I went so far as to look up the illustrator and will soon be getting new books put together in the same way. Shipping was fast also.

Buy it for the Art...

There are a multitude of Poe's out there to choose from, but the real draw here is the art of Gris Grimly. The book features slightly abridged texts for young readers of "The Black Cat," "The Masque of the Red Death," "Hop Frog," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." What makes this volume special is the way that text is embraced by and woven through Grimly's gloriously whimsical and twisted full color art that captures perfectly the macabre and maniacle tone of Poe. The volume is richly illustrated with art on every page. All in all a beautiful book and a great introduction to Poe for young readers of twisted tastes.

I read Edgar A. Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness. This book has 4 stories; Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hop Frog, and The Fall of the House of Usher. I won't go into detail about all the stories but my favorite story was The Masque of the Red Death.

The story starts with people who were having a masquerade at Prince Prospero's house. Each hour the clock chimed. At the 12th chime a person in a red cape came out of the clock and frightened everyone at the masquerade. Prince Prospero tried to kill him but the Prince died when he saw his face. Then, anyone who saw his face or dared to enter the red blood shot room died by bleeding to death. Will anyone survive? You will have to read it yourself to find out.

I though all of the stories in the book were scary and cool. I also thought the illustrations by Chris Grimley were very creative. I would recommend for anyone who likes horror to read this book.

About the Author
The author of the Kakehashi series of educational materials is a professor of Japanese and comparative culture at a private university in California. Living much of his life abroad and working as a diplomat, social integration was not only a personal must, but part of his job. Very Impressed

The shipping was very fast and in good packaging.

Right off into Chapter 1, it explains the writing systems, and there is a hiragana/ katakana chart. You WONT be able to continue into chapter 2 unless you have those two down, as it no longer uses romaji from that point.

As of now, it's only teaching grammar. The way it explains grammar is easy and comprehensible, it gives example sentences, then it explains those sentences as well. It will not teach vocabulary lists of words until ch.7.

This textbook is teaching you how a Japanese person would react/say in a situation, and also give a little background info.

The pages are of good quality. I highlight key components in the paragraphs to help me understand the context, and I can barely see it on the other side of the page, sometimes I don't see it. I also write in pen, which doesn't bleed through.

The textbook is also newly printed. On the back it labeled when the book was made, which was the day I ordered it. That means your book was not sitting somewhere, but made when you ordered it!

Finally, vocabulary is in kanji!! Don't worry, as there is furigana to go along with it!!

I am very impressed with the layout, ease of explanations, examples, clarifications, and background information. Please get this book, as it is the most current form of language taught in textbook (Most newly updated), and explains things in which you understand the concept easy.

Best Japanese textbook out there!

Japanese is very different from English, and that makes learning the language very difficult. By taking a very different approach than other textbooks, this book makes it as painless as possible to get you from knowing nothing about the language to functional fluency.

The book starts off with just grammar and no vocab so that you know how to make a sentence before you get overwhelmed by trying to memorize all the vocab in any new language. The rest of the book is then separated into themes that introduce Japanese culture and history, their mindset, additional grammar points, and vocab.

The book condenses the information you would get from four or five books of other textbooks, such as Genki or Nakama, into one. This means that you only get the important points without the other unnecessary information that make learning the language more confusing. Not only that, but the information is presented clearly and with nice, straight-forward rules backed with examples to illustrate them.

The book was written recently and with the idea that to know a language you should know it like a native speaker does. So, the book is as up-to-date as possible for a language that changes fairly quickly and presents the language as is for a native speaker, such as letting you know right off the bat that Japanese has kanji, writing the examples like it would be written in Japan (but also including reading aides of course), or explaining the Japanese mindset so you know why the language is used the way it is used.

The language of the book itself is also very approachable. It is not something that would require a lot of effort to read through, though I can't say the same about trying to memorize the information, which with any subject takes effort.

So overall, this is an excellent textbook that I would recommend to anyone trying to learn Japanese in a class or on their own. And for $40, which is much cheaper than other textbooks, it is a steal!

Not your normal textbook

As a scholar of Japanese, I've seen quite a few textbooks in my day. Most have more or less the same approach of academic bulemia, where the student is expected to take in a myriad of meaningless, over-simplified plug-it-in formulas, whether s/he understands them or not, and regurgitate them onto a standardized test. This is good if your goal is to pass a standarized test, such as the all too famous JLPT. I find most of what I have learned, and understood, has been outside of class, from my own scrutiny and investigation, and just interacting with native Japenese speakers.

Finally, here is a textbook with an approach that differs from the rest; learning what will be useful when talking to real live speakers of Japanese for a change! If you learn what Japanese actually SAY in any given situation, then you're not left stupified, hunting around in your head from the plethora of "grammar points" most textbooks make you learn in order to pass tests. And, the more you understand the words that you are saying, the less daunting the language will seem. All the grammar you learn actually has meaning and makes more sense when you understand it, instead of learning it by rote, and how to replace arbitrary parts.

This textbook is a must for scholars interested in gaining a more thorough understanding of Japanese and the cultural context it is spoken in.

A guide with a different perspective

This is an extraordinary travel guide. There are many sights and suggestions (of eateries and lodgings, in particular) that are not included in other guide books. The tips on traveling by car are good, especially considering that it carries the "Michelin" flag. All in all, the layout and contents give readers a fresh perspective when planning to travel to the Bordeaux and Aquitaine region.

The Green Guide, which indicates coverage of Aquitaine, does not cover the same area as the Michelin Map No.524 titled Aquitaine, leaving important cities such as Perigueux out of the Green Guide. I think the two publications should cover the same areas.

About the Author
Scott D. Sagan is professor of political science at Stanford University and codirector of the Center for International Security and Cooperation. He is the author of The Limits of Safety: Organizations, Accidents, and Nuclear Weapons and Moving Targets: Nuclear Strategy and National Security.

Kenneth N. Waltz is Emeritus Ford Professor of Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley and senior research associate at Columbia University’s Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies. His books include Man, the State, and War: A Theoretical Analysis and Theory of International Politics.

Scott Sagan and Kenneth Waltz are two of the most renowned political scientists of the last several decades. In the fourth edition of their seminal text: The Spread of Nuclear Weapons an enduring debate, the two giants of political science exchange rhetorical blows over whether more nuclear weapons are a good or bad thing for the world as a whole. Included in the fourth edition are expanded chapters on India-Pakistan, the Axis of Evil states (Iran, Iraq, and North Korea), and a debate over nuclear zero in the wake of President Obama’s comments about the future of nuclear weapons.
