Belem and in awe

In this book, Gary shares an incredible experience he had in Belem, Brazil in 2002 while preaching in a large stadium for thousands of people. Funny thing is that I am from belem and I was there on that time to testify all this. I was only a boy at that time, around the age of 17 and I was there serving as one of the translators. Funny thing that I bought this book and I got shocked when I read this part where he shares his experiences there. I'm amazed! I remember seeing him preaching with my friends. He was really rocking out and preaching with such power and authority! I believe more than one thousand people got saved on that day. I feel so blessed by knowing that I was there seeing all that. I didn't know it meant a lot to him. Today Im 32 years old and i live in Oregon, married and I have two kids. It's a delightful surprise when.. I get the book.. I read it.. And he's talking about my hometown and I was there when all that happened!! I was there! I felt like I traveled back in time and I was just living every single second of that special crusade all over again... I read this entire book in 1 hour. Loved it.. Not 5 stars but 10 thousand!

About the Author
Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, PhD, is the Dean of Education at the Universidad de las Am�ricas in Quito, Ecuador. An excellent resource

Finally, FINALLY, the book I've wanted to read about education has been written; the text that clearly links the emotions and science of teaching and learning. I've had my copy of the book for less than two weeks and it is already dog-earned and full of annotated post-it notes and scrawled-in margins. 'Mind, Brain and Education Science' is, hands-down, *the most fascinating* textbook I have read during my career in education.

Tokuhama-Espinosa's writing is clear, concise and scholarly, and yet it resonates with a warm, accessible tone. I hope Mind, Brain and Education Science becomes a cornerstone of teacher education in the future and that this text becomes a foundation of that teaching. Our profession needs it.

Reminded me of why I first fell in love with romance novels!

I used to read an absurd number of romance novels, but I've found myself with less time, disposable income and patience than I used to have, so there are now only a few authors whose books I'll still always check out. (Theresa Romain is another one in case you're trying to see if we have similar tastes or just want a recommendation for a new-to-you author!) The first two books of Tessa Dare's Castles Ever After series didn't really click with me. Honestly, I found myself missing my favorite entries from the Spindle Cove series and wondering if I'd ever truly love any of Dare's newer work. So my expectations for this one were moderate, but I'm thrilled to report that this ended up one of the very most pleasurable reading experiences I've had this year.

The heroine was just the type I tend to love and relate to most---she's caring, creative, smart, passionate about things other than men and competent but with clearly established flaws that keep her from being dully and unrelatably 'perfect.' Maddie (I even love her name...you know how little things about a book just connect with you and make you think 'this is so the book I was meant to find'?!) suffers from what would today be diagnosed as a social anxiety disorder. She creates a fictitious boyfriend to avoid dealing with real life men...only said "made up" boyfriend appears on her doorstep one day. Jaded but fundamentally kind Scottish soldier Logan is more flawed and troubled than the man of her amusingly active imagination, of course, but turns out to be a true hero in all the best possible ways. (And, yes, I love the hero's name as well...in addition to his passion, courage and blend of strength and vulnerability!)

It's not exactly a spoiler to reveal that Logan and Maddie eventually fall in love despite and in some ways even because of their flaws, but it's how they get there that's rewarding. Instead of a series of contrived and highly annoying "misunderstandings" that could be resolved with painfully simple explanations neither provides (may the book gods save us from romances that rely on those to sustain 350+ pages of plot!), Maddie and Logan grow closer by seeing how each deals with other people and conflicts in their lives, come to terms with their pasts, challenge but support each other, and just generally make each other better people even when they clash on a given issue.

Other things I loved:

One of the primary reasons Tessa Dare is still a "go to" author of mine even when I find some of her books disappointing is that her prose and dialogue are just uncommonly sharp, smart and witty. I'm a language lover, and the humor and subtle insight that characterizes Tessa Dare's best work makes it a special favorite of mine.

A few of the minor characters in this one are really vivid and memorable. I especially adored Maddie's Aunt Thea.

The book gives a few poignant illustrations of how war can affect men both physically and psychologically without descending into preachy, self-serious grimness.

When a Scot...is warm, witty and sweet without being over-the-top silly, utterly insubstantial fluff. The more emotional moments feel really well earned and genuine (as opposed to falsely melodramatic and overdone!)

The few things I didn't love:

I'm not a fan of very explicit love scenes, and Tessa Dare's are always more lengthy and detailed than I personally enjoy. The good news is that Logan and Maddie are definitely NOT one of those couples who feel like they're bonded by physical lust with very little emotional and intellectual connection. (That's a huge pet peeve of mine about many modern romance novels and is one reason why I read far fewer than I used to!)

The hero's use of Scottish phrases adds authenticity---he's supposed to be Scottish, after all!---but could potentially be mildly annoying and distracting for those who don't like a lot of "ayes" and terms most of us aren't familiar with popping up in dialogue.

Even if you didn't love the first two books of this series (and I'm among the seemingly few who didn't!), I'd urge lovers of witty, warm, mood-lifting romances to check this one out. The theme about reality never quite living up to your fiction-fueled imagination but sometimes being even better in unexpected ways is likely to resonate with many of us 'bookworms'!

I loved it.

I loved this book! It is funny and charming, sexy and romantic. The characters are fabulous. The pacing is spot on. There’s a love story I can believe in and an ending that totally satisfies. What more can you want?

Madeline loves living a quiet, solitary existence. She doesn’t need to be alone necessarily, but she hates to be surrounded by people. Crowds make her panic and the idea of coming out amid crushing balls simply terrifies her. So she invents a foreign paramour who conveniently has to leave the country and serve as a soldier before anyone in her family can meet him. She picks a name out of thin air: Captain Logan MacKenzie, and she precedes to write him letters to keep up appearances. She thinks the missives will end up in a dead letter office, so they become a diary of a sort, sharing the details of her ruse, and later, her life. Of course, she has no idea there actually is a soldier by that name, who comes to receive every single one of the letters she sends over several years time.

Eventually Madeline wants to give up the lie. She tells everyone that Logan is dead and she retires to an old Scottish castle willed to her, so she can “mourn” properly. Imagine her surprise when the real Logan shows up at her door, demanding a wedding. You see, he is responsible for his fellow soldiers who have nowhere to go after the war. Madeline’s castle seems like the perfect solution. He threatens to expose her lies unless she agrees and becomes his wife.

Now it might sound like Logan is a big jerk, but he’s not. He’s a good man and despite the circumstances, both Madeline –and I– had no choice but to fall for him. He is so loyal and true to his broken band of warriors. And despite his belief that he has no heart, his hard shell only stands to cover up a warm, gooey center.

Madeline, meanwhile, is engaging and smart. But what I love most about her is how she knows herself so well. How she can deconstruct Logan’s behaviors into the building blocks of a romantic fantasy, despite her best intentions to think with her head. He is supposed to be this big strong warrior, but her heart can’t resist all the things that make him vulnerable. I loved watching them fight the sweet emotional connection between them… and the sexual fire that kept pulling them closer together.

The romance is soooo good. The secondary characters, like Madeline’s aunt and Logan’s amnesiac friend, are well drawn and interesting. But what really seals the deal is how effortless Tessa Dare makes it all feel. It’s so funny that I laughed out loud, but it never felt forced. Neither did the romance. Or anything at all about this book.

It was a hit with me on every level. I would definitely recommend.

Madeline Gracechurch is a shy girl. She suffers panic attacks while in large gatherings. Knowing she would never be able to survive the Ton and their many parties, she makes up a suitor to relieve herself of having to attend them. She posts dozens of letters to a made-up Captain Logan MacKenzie writing about her everyday family life as well as her girlish fantasies. At first they are funny as she knows they are written to a fictional boyfriend, but after awhile, they are a bit more serious and take on the effect of a diary of sorts for her. After five years of living with this huge lie and receiving a castle and land, she informs her family that the Captain has died in War. Being widowed so young and mourning her loss, Madeline is content to live her life in the castle doing illustrations of animals for books. She's very good at what she does and makes a good living doing it. Until one day when a stranger comes to the castle claiming to be Captain Logan MacKenzie-a very alive Captain Logan MacKenzie-back from the War, and in receipt of all Madeline's letters!

Logan MacKenzie is everything that Maddie's letters depict-Scottish, a Captain in the War, tall, dark and handsome! He's returned from the War with his men who have had their dreams smashed upon their return. He wants to make their hopes and dreams a reality by creating a community and living on Madeline's land. If he has to sacrifice himself by marrying this foolish girl, then so be it.

I loved the storyline that Tessa Dare has created in When a Scot Ties the Knot! Maddie is very smart. She had to be on her toes to keep the lies straight for so long. She's very creative, super shy, and a bit headstrong. I had a little difficulty connecting with her in the beginning but warmed up to her as I kept reading. Logan I loved him from the start! Very loyal to his men! He wants to give them everything that's been taken from them-homes, land, and love. They are all fractured in some way and he feels it's his duty to give them these things. He himself has never had a family, home, or love. He was an orphan raised by a Vicar only to be shipped off to War instead of sending the Vicar's own sons. But Logan persevered. He worked his way up from a footman to Captain during the War, so he is no stranger to hard-work. I really liked how his background was revealed little by little. It made it interesting and didn't bog you down with pages of back story. Once Logan appears, Maddie has to accept him or lose everything she has-her home, her reputation, and most of all her family.

This is the first book in the Castles Ever After series I have read. I intend to take a look at the others as this was an outstanding read. What are the odds of something so impossible coming true? Only one... and it's irresistibly charming!

Excellent resource - very thorough

This book has it all if you want to start your own group. Easy to read, fleshes out every aspect needed to get a group going, and spiritually thougtht-provoking. A friend and I have begun our own group as a direct result of this book. Particularly helpful was a chapter offering fully planned out meetings (theme and alter suggestions, readings, group activity options). It's all mapped out. It also has lists of other resources that are available to support woman's groups (books, videos, music, web sites, etc.)

Inspiring and practical guide that really works

I used this book to start a spirituality group and I have nothing but praise for it! Everything you need to start your own group is there, including meeting topics that are already planned out for you. My group has relied heavily on this guide, both in our formative stage and also during the first few months of meetings. I anticipate that we will continue using it for at least another year or two. My copy has circulated amongst all the group members -- it's getting pretty dog-eared! "Sacred Circles" has been the main contributing factor in the success of my group.

The titular firebrand in this revealing history is not an individual but a curious and ambitious project: the establishment, in March 1863, of a permanent Union outpost in Florida to serve as a haven for fugitive slaves and to help ignite the destruction of Southern slavery from within. In readable prose and relying exclusively on primary sources, historian Ash (When the Yankees Came) tells the little-known but crucial story of how 900 newly freed slaves, under the leadership of white abolitionist officers, captured Jacksonville. They fought alongside white Union troops and liberated slaves until their mission was abruptly aborted by their commanding officer, Gen. David Hunter, one of the dimmest stars in the Union Army firmament. Ash makes a strong case that the successes of the two black regiments changed the course of war by convincing President Lincoln to authorize the full-scale enlistment of African-Americans. By the end of the war, some 200,000 black troops had served in the Union Army. Without them, Ash contends, the Union might very well have failed to conquer the Confederacy. (July)

The award-winning film Glory publicized the valor of the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts and their assault on Fort Wagner. However, the Civil War’s first black regiments to see combat were the First and Second South Carolina. Ash, a professor of history, has told their story in an exciting and inspiring book. Unlike the men in the Fifty-fourth, the black soldiers in these regiments were almost exclusively liberated slaves. In March 1863, they were sent to Confederate-controlled Florida, where they quickly captured Jacksonville. The long-range goal was to create a liberated zone where runaway slaves from all over the South would flee, further draining the manpower resources of the South. The regiments were led by Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a loud, brash white abolitionist who had advocated violent resistance to slavery before the war. Although the military effects of the campaign were negligible, Ash asserts that the courage of these black troops encouraged Lincoln to recruit black regiments on a much wider scale. Ash effectively uses primary sources to provide an intense chronicle of the battlefield while illuminating an obscure but gallant episode of the Civil War. --Jay Freeman

Firebrand of Liberty is a little known story of the 1st South Carolina colored regiment which was commanded by Col. Thomas Wentworth Higginson. Stephen Ash tells a riviting story about former slaves who, under the teaching of Higginson, become Union soldiars as brave and disclipined as any white troops.

They were the first black regiment to fight for the Union and the first regiment to fight alongside white soldiers. But this book not only tells the story of their fighting history but it also tells about their lives and feelings. Higginson took every opportunity to get to know his men and he enjoyed listening to their stories. They also develp a mutual respect and affection that is touching.

One feels it is too bad that they lost their designation as the 1st South Carolina and became the US 33rd. They, of course, were overshadowed by the 54th Massachuttes who became known as the first black regiment. But thanks to this book, they are in their proper place.

Good Read

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it at a good place to start on the topic. Since this is history I suppose I don't have to worry about a plot spoiler, but there was a little bit of suspense that ended in disappoinment me to me. The author indicates that the capture of Jacksonville and the related raids had much greater military significance than had been thought. Basically his case is that the moderate success of the mission allowed the decision for full scale employment of black soldiers to go ahead. The evidence while pretty good is mostly circumstantial.

Stephen V. Ash has written another winner. Absolutely fantastic book about the Sea Islands of South Carolina during the Civil War. Superb scholarship, and reads like a novel to boot. Would be a great Christmas gift for anyone interested in US history, black history, the Civil War, and a great story.

Good primer on tax law, for 2014 anyway.

This book provides a clear summary of tax law as it affects both individuals and corporations. It is laid out in an easy-to-follow manner, cites relevant tax codes, and provides sample scenarios to explain concepts. In some places, it contains detail on tax law that currently has no effect. One star off for not providing much detail on the importance of the tax codes to decision-making, and how some of the tax codes are used/abused in real life. Much in the book is subject to change from year to year as new legislation is added.

The Amazon kindle e-textbooks are amazing. Making flash cards, highlighting, note taking, etc. I'll never buy a paper textbook again (unless I have to).
