Loving the cat!

This is my review of the first 3 books of the Legacy series.
I downloaded the fist book while on vacation in Jacksonville Beach Florida. The forecast was for rain so I thought I will have something to read while indoors. It was a Amazon recommendation.
I started the book and got pulled in the these colorful characters and this magic users story. I kinda got so into this first book that I didn't notice it never rained, I was hold up reading instead of out playing on the beaches.
I just love the smart moth of the cat!
I have seen Ryan compared to Jim Butcher with humor.
And that is about right, plus, a very good author to be compared to.
I finished the 3 books and I can feel his writing becoming stronger, more mature. With his constant bantering still humorous.
I did find the monsters hard to picture. My thought is that a tiny bit more realistic foes would be more to my liking. I just had hard time picturing all these monsters with so many different animals morphed together. But it took some out of the box thinking to come up,with them.

Monster Rush!

This was an excellent read. It was exciting, emotional (lot of fear and anger and appropriate sadness) and constant action. It was much more than either of the first two volumes, which were both excellent. This one felt almost stuffed - like putting ten pounds of delicious boiled crawfish in a five pound bag. What's to complain about, right ? Well it may have overloaded my synapses with so much so quickly. Great world building, race building and creature building. Wonderful resolution with the heavenly dudes and wonderful creativity in that final scene. One I may have to read again just to absorb it all. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a paranormal tale, a fantasy story or a monster-demon book. Buy it now. You want to be caught up when the next one is ready. And surely you've read the first two installments; if not, you are missing out.

If you do not do anything else, make sure you read this series!

Ryan Attard has done it again with the 3rd installment in the legacy series. Every time I get one of these books I can’t put them down till it’s complete and then I’m scouring the internet tot try to find out how long I have to wait for the next! Book 3 give you just the right combination of action, humor, and just enough sexual conflict to keep you wondering what is going to happen next. Ryan does a great job of making you connect with the characters and before you know it, feel like they are long lost friends of yours. I was one of the lucky individuals who had the chance to read the book before release and I cannot thank you enough for that privilege Ryan.

Andy Petrella

Andy Petrella is first and foremost a Belgian mathematician who tried to find a way to apply his skills to the concrete world. One of them was programming. So, after graduating in Mathematics, he continued his study in Informatics at the University of Li�ge.

He quickly became interested in Geomatics because of the heterogeneous needs of this discipline, which led him to mainly work in the GIS field. Over there, he got the opportunity to sharpen his skills on distributed architecture for interoperable solutions.

After spending time developing in Java and integrating scripting languages such as Python and JavaScript, he slowly moved back to functional programming. Although working with JVM was a constraint, he tried his hand at Scala and took the opportunity to use Play! 2 while it was still in development.

Having found a new way to enjoy mathematics along with programming, he joined one of his friends and they decided to create NextLab (http://www.nextlab.be/), a company that offers the perfect context to push Play! 2 and Scala to the foreground through projects and customers.

Andy also loves to share his experiences, his enjoyment, and his discoveries through the co-creation of a user group called WAJUG (http://wajug.be/) dedicated to help Walloons to meet together and share ideas about information technology. Light on advanced content plus horrible grammar = not so great

Overall, the book might be somewhat informative for a very novice developer, hence the two stars, but not much beyond that. There is nothing really in-depth here and it doesn't go much beyond what is found in the online documentation. It actually uses that as an excuse - saying the documentation is too sparse to cover one topic or another so it wasn't included in the book. It also spends so much time literally advertising Play! and Typesafe, even providing a demonstration of the paid Typesafe dashboard, that I wonder if the company had a heavy hand in its publication at times. The author also spends a lot of time describing and showing examples for CoffeeScript, LESS, AJAX, etc. (non-core framework functionality) seemingly to fill space. I find this a little odd for a book by such a reputable publisher.

Also, I got the Kindle edition so I can't speak for the other formats, but at least in the one I have the grammar is horrendous. It seems every other paragraph begins or ends with an exclamation such as "It's that trivial!" or "Its AJAX!" or something to that effect. Misplaced and overused enthusiasm, horrible grammar, misspellings galore and just poor use of the English language on every page lead me to doubt the editors and reviewers spent much, if any, time looking over this book before putting it up for sale. There are a lot of awkward phrases in the book as well which don't make a whole lot of sense. Very poor quality for a $40+ book, not what I'd expect. Obviously the author is not a native English speaker, but I can't fault him - I fault the reviewers who let these issues pass to the final version unchecked.

If you really want to learn Play! Framework, stick to the documentation and do some experimentation with the examples the core team provides which are great. This book may give you a high-level overview of some very basic functionality, but a lot of it will be outdated by the time you read it and/or just wrong from the get-go (which I found a couple times in the examples). Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of literature out there for Play! 2.x and it seems the documentation that is out there, like this book, isn't very good.

Save your money and time

If you intend to do anything non-trivial with the Play framework then don't bother with this book. It is very light on details. I learned more about play by browsing the documentation on the http://www.playframework.com/ than using this book. I realize that the author was trying to present a beginners guide to Play but like so many beginner books the author confuses "being chatty" with "being simple for the beginner". If you really intend to do some serious work with Play than I recommend a) start with docs, 2) then read Play for Scala (Manning - currently in MEAP form) 3) Do a lot of Googling to fill in Gaps.

Good Introduction Book

This book is a good one to get familiar with Play Framework. However, if you are looking for an advanced Play book, this is not for you.
The book follows the well-known chat-like applications (in the book Forum + Chat + Twitter Feed), but I must say, the approach used here was different from the ones I was used to. The book is centered in the Java API, but the code provided with the book contains examples for both Java and Scala. Pros:
* Good Introductory Book
* Incremental complexity
* Includes Testing
* Explains how to bring the app live

Cons:
* Some noise introduced when explaining outsider frameworks or languages (CoffeeScript, Less)
* Asynchronous should be explained in more depth

I'll try to give my 5 cents chapter by Chapter:

1) Getting Started
This chapter is skip-able if you are familiar with Play. Nothing new under the sun here.

2) Taking the First Step
Another introduction, now it is Scala's turn. This is needed for the Templates used in Play! Framework. Again, nothing new if you are familiar with Scala.

3) Templating Easily with Scala
Here it's when the tutorial really begins. It's a nice introduction to Templates in Play! Framework, nothing exhaustive though. In this chapter, there is a tiny introduction to Less, as I said before, in my opinion, this only adds some noise to the picture.

4) Handling Data on the Server Side
Our tiny example grows in this chapter as we provide it with a Database. This chapter contains a quick introduction to ORM's and how we can validate the input data easily in Play Framework.

5) Dealing with Content
Nice explanation on how the content is being parsed and which parses already exist in Play. Well explained.

6) Moving to Real-time Web Applications
The most interesting part of this chapter is the Websockets introduction, very basic though. In this chapter our little app becomes dynamic as we push data from the server to the Browser. Again, there is some noise due to the (unneeded?) introduction to CoffeeScript.

7) Web Services
Easy introduction to REST and problems derived from interacting with 3rd-party services like Twitter. Our little app becomes asynchronous. I think the author doesn't manage to explain the complexity of asynchronicity and how it works behind the scenes.

8) Smashing All Test Layers

So Happy To Have Found This Book

This book fills a definite void in parenting literature. It contains a collection of perspectives from people who are dealing with raising children in mixed or nonreligious households. It covers topics like dealing with mixed beliefs, death and consolation, values, holidays, community, and critical thinking. It is not prescriptive in that you won't find a set answer for any topic but rather a variety of viewpoints and shared experiences from those who are dealing with them now or have dealt with them as they were raising their own children. It provides the background and resources to adopt those strategies that you feel are right for you or adapt your own. It has been great for me in thinking about issues and developing ideas with my husband as we are planning to start our family.

A wonderful resource!

I had been waiting for this book for a long time. As a secular parent, it is always nice to read about other parents in the same situation and the various stumbling blocks we may run into. The collection of essays in this book outline most of those-religion and education, fostering a respect for religious people, the Santa question, teaching children to stand up for their beliefs, etc. The group of writers in the book focus on the many different viewpoints of secular parents. It isn't preachy in any way, and offers valuable insight into the big tent of secular belief. I highly recommend this for all secular parents, or anyone who follows a philosophy outside the mainstream.

Finally, SOMETHING!

My wife and I are about to bring our first child into the world and were happy when we found a book that discusses ways to deal with the issue of holidays, belief in Santa/Easter Bunny, moral development in children without the threat of eternal punishment, how to tackle the questions kids are bound to ask about life/death, and so much more. Overall, it is a great resource for humanist or atheist parents (or wannabe parents) who wish to raise rational, freethinking children with the skills to make up their own minds as adults.

The essays are from a wide variety of people with viewpoints, backgrounds, and ideas not always similar. It was the contrast of ideas that helped my wife and I form a game plan on how we can raise children who will never stop asking "why?" for the right reasons. Our favorite sections are Does God Exist, which is written in a wonderfully and easy to understand conversational style by Stephen Law, and Dealing with Death in a Secular family by Kendyl Gibbons. Although the piece that I'm sure we'll go back to over and over is the list famous freethinkers. Ahhh resources, magnificent, beautiful resources...

My only complaint, and it is to be unavoidable, is that this book didn't come sooner. It was my hope to find a solid community to immediately fall into, but it was not meant to be. And even though there are over 20 million of us in the US, it IS hard to rally secular people around that single ideal. So I send my heartfelt thanks to Dale McGowan for helping to foster our community.

Read the book, raise intelligent, freethinking children, and the next generation will not have to work so hard to find a common identity.

Edit: I also wish that more of the books suggested were still in print.
