About the Author
"Sandy Pfeiffer" has spent a career in technical and professional writing. With a Ph.D. in English, he is vice president for academic affairs and a professor of English at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. His home department offers both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Technical and Professional Communication, as well as a B. A. in International Technical Communications.

Besides the "Pocket Guide," Pfeiffer has written "Technical Writing: A Practical Approach," now in its 5th edition (Prentice Hall, 2003). The book is used in colleges and universities around the country. He also wrote "Proposal Writing: The Art of Friendly Persuasion" (Merrily 1989); coauthored, with Chuck Keller, "Proposal Writing: The Act of Friendly and Winning Persuasion" (Prentice Hall, 2000); and wrote "Pocket Guide to Public Speaking" (Prentice Hall, 2002).

Since 1979, Pfeiffer has taught communication seminars to business, industry, and government groups in the United States and overseas. Sample seminar topics include Report Writing, Proposals, Oral Presentations, Effective Meetings, and Technical Editing.

Awful Book

I was required to buy this book for school (Professional and Technical Communications class for Engineers and CS majors). It pretty much was a miserable read. While it provided some helpful hints and tips for writing, the examples it provided were terrible. I am the stereotypical engineer who cannot write, but even I knew that the example cover sheets, reports, etc were bad examples. It really taught me what not to do rather than guide me on how to write, which would have been much more helpful.

decent book for school

I pruchased this book for a class i was taking on technical writing. It has good content but was very difficult to actually read because of some design choices. The designers of this book need to take a document design class! In order to highlight important information they used hot pink font on white paper in size 12 font! I have read that paragraph well over 10 times and I cannot tell you what it says. Pages 16, 17,have the hot pink sections. The rest of the book was actually easy to read and full of good information.

Useful for More than School

Although I have only read two chapters out of this so far for my college class, I already find this book very informational. I hope to someday be a writer, and from those two chapters I have read, I have already learned how to use bullets more properly in my writing, and to setup graphs and other informational charts, etc. If you are planning on writing anything "Technical" I would highly recommend this to you.

About the Author
Philip Kotler is the SC Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of international marketing at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University. He received his Master s degree at the University of Chicago and his PhD at MIT, both in economics. Dr Kotler is the author of Marketing Management, now in its thirteenth edition and the world s most widely used marketing textbook in graduate schools of business. He has authored dozens of other successful books and has written more than 100 articles in leading journals. He is the only three-time winner of the coveted Alpha Kappa Psi award for the best annual article in the Journal of Marketing. He has consulted with many major US and international companies in the areas of marketing strategy and planning, marketing organisation and international marketing. He has travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and South America, advising companies and governments about global marketing practices and opportunities. Gary Armstrong is the Crist W Blackwell Distinguished Professor of Undergraduate Education at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina. He holds undergraduate and Master s degrees in business from Wayne State University and he received his PhD in marketing from Northwestern University. Dr Armstrong has contributed numerous articles to leading business journals. As a consultant and researcher, he has worked with many companies on marketing research, sales management and marketing strategy. Mad�le Tait is an associate professor in the Department of Marketing Management at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. This slim volume reads like an extended monologue on On the Media, which is pretty much what I was hoping for when I bought it. Brooke's insightful observations give careful weight to a number of the different perspectives that led us to now without being condescending towards either side, while recognizing that her perspectives all come from her own understanding of reality. I tune in to On the Media every week precisely for Bob & Brooke's unique blend of cynicism, analysis, and, oddly enough, hope. I will absolutely be getting this for friends and relatives.

A Gestalt for Our Zeitgeist

This book provides the insightful reflections of a highly intelligent and genuinely earnest chronicler of the current political and media culture (one of the hosts of NPR's "On the Media" weekly program), on how and why we got to such a paradoxical and divided place in our great American democracy and press. It reads as a conceptual romp through various cultural icons, from Jonathan Swift to Jefferson to Seinfeld, so I found myself having to think in more of an artistic way (rather than the professional STEM mindset, I use most waking hours), but most of the connections the author makes I was able to follow. By accompanying her on her intellectual journey of processing the last election and the current administration, I feel better, in that I at least somewhat comprehend what is going on, and that there are things I can actually do to build and grow in my understanding, accepting, and bridging the chasm on a personal level.

I thought this book was outstanding. Her keen insights into our thought process reminded me of the"myths" described in the book Sapiens written by Yuval Noah Harari. These shared myths are essential to what enabled us to become civilized on such a large scale. Her book was more practical in its analysis and application. Also many hundreds of pages shorter. not really helpful

Most of this book is just the author's view on a bunch of different matters like whether to let students use notes on tests or whether to be friends with students. The "work smarter" advice is pretty much two things: Work hard while you're at work (including your prep period. Get it done!), and shorten how long it takes you to grade things by using scantrons.
I don't recommend this book for anyone looking for solid advice on using time wisely or working efficiently.

Might be helpful for someone who has never taught before, but difficult to read

The book does contain some advice, however much of it is the author's opinion based on a survey he conducted. For example, he spends several pages discussing why teachers should get scantron machines to grade multiple choice tests, because based on his study of ~300 teachers, about 4/5ths grade multiple choice tests by hand.

The book is also filled with many personal anecdotes - the author isn't a huge fan of mandatory group work, and so on. The author frequently cites his own research ("32% of teachers are not happy teaching") which doesn't add much context to the text. Yes, teachers are unhappy teaching. So are people who work in cubicles or at McDonalds.

While some teachers could probably only do their work during prep periods and never take work home ("going to work twice") this wouldn't work for many teachers who may only get 1 hour of "prep" per day. If teachers never did any work outside prep period, we'd all fall behind and be fired. The again, if we followed Chapter 1's wisdom and only used scantron tests, maybe we could pull it off... but then would we be offering our students insightful feedback?

For a beginning teacher, there are several good ideas in this book. However, it's important not to view the entire book as a holy grail - because several of the ideas in this book don't seem like "teach smarter" they seem like "teach lazier". While I understand the purpose of the book is about avoiding as much work as possible so you are less stressed out and have more energy to dedicate to the actual teaching, some of the ideas come off as very lazy, not very efficient.

Aside from the content of the book, the structure is also lacking. At times the flow of the book seems like a stream of consciousness - the reader isn't quite sure where the author is taking us and then we abruptly change subjects to something else, only to revisit the same subject again in a few chapters. Too many personal anecdotes and not enough ideas. What works in one classroom, in one school, for one subject won't work elsewhere. Students in the midwest are different from students in New York or Los Angeles, and a one-size-fits-all approach isn't going to happen.

Again, although the author does present a few ideas for a beginning teacher, on the whole there isn't much new here. Become a more efficient teacher, not a lazy one.

Smart teacher, smart worker!

Being a former student of the author, I knew this book would be full of insight and knowledge that would be instilled upon me. Even though I am not a teacher, I believe I can still benefit from the perspective of one of the best teachers out there, because there may, and probably will be, a day where I am in a position to teach someone something. From time management to engaging students to actively study to respect in the classroom, there is something in this book that everyone can benefit from and can be applied outside the classroom as well. Something I was able to learn first hand was the importance of prioritizing time management, a streamlined way of studying, and respect for others - which goes above and beyond the history class Mr. Prokop has set out to teach. This is a book for anyone in any occupation, and is well worth the time to read!

About the Author

Larry Harris holds the Fred V. Keenan Chair in Finance at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. In July 2002, Professor Harris was appointed Chief Economist of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he served until June 2004.

Most helpful trading book I have read

The author does not lay out a trading plan but he does give the blueprint if the reader uses his/her imagination. It's the kind of book one should read and then meditate on. In fact, they should ponder the material after each section. The insights that are shared would take the rest of us years and years of real world experience to gleam. Here, Harris presents it to us on a golden platter, if we take a few moments to digest and review what he's shared. It should get your mind racing with possibilities. Couldn't ask for more, except perhaps for an updated edition.

Good book but full of typos (Kindle edition)

I purchased the Kindle edition of this book. I don't know about the hard copies, but the e-version is chock full of typos which sometimes makes it hard to read.
Other than that, it's a well written book that clearly explains the material with a few jokes and amusing stories thrown into the mix to make it more interesting.

It would be excellent if the author could publish an updated version - with more examples outside stock market and more analysis in High Frequency Trading.

Canterbury Tales - Which Version is Best For You?

Over some period I have read several translations of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. My first experience, selections in a high school text, was not promising. (Perhaps, I was not yet ready for Chaucer.) Translating poetry from one language to another is difficult and often unsuccessful. Translating Chaucer from Middle English is not much easier. English has changed dramatically in the last 600 years, to the point that Middle English is nearly indecipherable. For example, we read Chaucer's description of the Knight's appearance:

Of fustian he wered a gipoun (Of coarse cloth he wore a doublet)
Al bismotered with his habergeoun (All rust-spotted by his coat-of-mail)

A glossary, diligence, and time are required for reading the original Chaucer. If you choose to do so, the Riverside Chaucer edition (edited by L. Benson) and the Norton Critical Edition (edited by Olson and Kolve) are highly recommended. The Signet Classic paperback edited by D. R. Howard modernizes the spelling a bit, but largely adheres to the original Chaucer and is an easier introduction to Middle English.

Although in most cases the instructor assigns a particular version of Canterbury Tales, it can be exceedingly helpful to pick-up an additional version or two. A slightly different translation may entirely surprise you, even resonate with you, making Chaucer much more enjoyable. I suggest that you look for these versions:

Selected Canterbury Tales, Dover Thrift edition - provides a poetic, rather than literal interpretation, and is quite readable. The collection of tales is fairly small, however.

Canterbury Tales, Penguin edition, translated by Nevill Coghill, is an excellent poetic translation. It is a complete collection, arranged by Group A thru H, and also includes The Parson's Prologue, The Parson's Tale in synopsis, and Chaucer's Retractions. Coghill's translation remains my favorite.

The Canterbury Tales, Bantam Classic paperback edited by Hieatt, uses the "facing page" format with the original Chaucer on the left and a modern literal translation on the right page. I found the literal translation a little wooden, but this edition can be quite helpful if you need some help with Middle English. (A guide to phonetics, grammar, spellings, and a glossary is provided.)

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (Barrons Educational Series) uses an "Interlinear Translation" format in which each line of Middle English is followed by a modern translation (literal to make the comparison easier). I rather like this approach.

Canterbury Tales, John Murray Publishers, London is hard to find, but provides a partial translation to modern English, maintaining as much as possible of the Middle English. This rather clever approach is somewhat risky, but the translator H. L. Hitchins pulls it off. With some effort I could follow the text without continually referring to a glossary and in a limited way I was "reading Middle English".

Canterbury Tales, Pocket Books, prose translation by R. M. Lumiansky, is easy to read, but while this prose format adheres to the storyline, it is only a shadow of the poetic Chaucer. It might prove useful if you are not comfortable with poetry.

One degree of separation...

The question is not whether to read the Canterbury Tales, but whether to read them in this translation -- or whether to go for the Middle English with all its difficulties.

I'm a purist. As a Chaucer teacher myself, I'd say read the tales in the Riverside Chaucer or in the Norton Critcal editon with lots of footnotes. But, yes, that is harder, and I'd rather see readers get some experience than none.

So, if you are going to compromise, Nevill Coghill's poetic translation is really as good a place to go as any. You will get the basic sense of Chaucer's verse; you'll get the basic rhymes and rhythms too. This is the translation that's used in most high school classes, and in many college survey classes that don't read the text in the original. It's really a fine compromise -- not only a good place to start, but also a decent trot if you are struggling with the Middle English.

You can find some closer translations of some of the tales online if you look up Michael Murphy's websites. But for all their virtues, they don't have the smoothness of Coghill's renditions; Murphy's translations are not the complete Tales; and it's clunky to print them out. This economical edition is probably still the best place to start with Chaucer, father of English poetry and the originator of comedy in the English language.

A great, easy-to-read retelling of Chaucer's tales

The biggest hurdle in reading Chaucer is the language. Trying to read his work in Middle English is impossible without really good footnotes, and some of the "translations" are even worse--they're written in a high-blown, pompous style that takes all the fun out of the stories.
All this being so, I was delighted to find the Puffin Classics version retold by Geraldine McCaughrean! The tales are told in an easy-to-read, flowing style that captures the bawdy humor of the originals, without being over-crass (this is a children's book, after all.) I found myself often laughing out loud, and wishing I'd found this version much sooner, because it makes Chaucer fun to read! I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to try Chaucer but feels intimidated by the scholarly-looking versions available in the "Literature and Classics" sections. You won't become expert in reading Middle English, but you WILL see why The Canterbury Tales has such a wonderful reputation!

About the Author
Roald Dahl�(1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. "It is fun to read and funny. I love the part of the boy with the talking tummy."

I thought some of the Rhymes might be a little to grody for a little girl, but that is the essence of this little book. She takes delight in reading it aloud to her friends at school. And she never tires of it. She is a Roald Dahl fan and I am over the moon about it. I think Dahl and his books are a great alternative or addition to Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House. But I think ultimately he will outlast many of these other books. He is a classic.

A fun, silly book that children and adults would love

My cousin bought me this book when I was about six and I still love it (I'm 17 now). My whole family thinks it's a hilarious book and we have given it to many of our friends for presents.

Dirty Beasts

Dahl and Blake are top notch in this 1983 collection of short stories. However, reading this book as an adult, I was surprised at the overt racism in one of the poems. The Flying Cow features a "horrid man who traveled from Afghanistan" and then calls him a "silly foreign freak" as the cow poops on his head. Unbelievable!
