Wonderfully informative

The information presented in this book is amazing in its scope and depth. Histories of anything usually leave me bored, but I was thoroughly impressed by the unusual yet thorough way Morris presented the information. It is not intended to be a how-to manual. If you just want to know how to make perfume, soap, candles, etc. and don't want to be knowledgeable about your product then this is not for you. Personally, I found it fascinating.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Besides relating the history of perfume, it highlights geopolitic information that creates a well-rounded biography of perfume. I highly recommend reading this book if you are interested in learning about the history of perfume.

A Tarot Deck for Cooks and Food Lovers

This boxed set comes with a 159 page guidebook and 78 over sized Tarot cards. The box is signature Schiffer style with a magnetic lid and sturdy construction. The card backs are green in color and reversible. The card fronts are borderless with the exception of the area where the card name is on the bottom of each card. The art for each card was created by Judith Mackay Stirt who also wrote the guidebook for this deck. Each card is a painting.

The Preface indicates that this deck was brought into being by the concept of hats. Each of us wearing many hats is a theme that we can relate to. From here the Preface tells us that the kitchen is the heart of the home and the Cook’s Tarot is a way of “celebrating the cooks who gather, create, and serve food as physical and spiritual nourishment for others.”

The Introduction that begins on page 8 tells a bit about the history of tarot and this is where Judith explains how the cards in The Cook’s Tarot are named and numbered-in other words she discusses the Major and Minor Arcana. The Introduction also tells us of Judith’s journey while creating this deck.

There are 5 spreads illustrated in the guidebook. Each illustration is done in black and white. For each card of the deck we are given information and a black and white image of the card. The card information includes: Acranum (card number), Zodiac Affinity, Key Elements (symbols), Card Meaning and Kitchen Wisdom. The Court Cards are grouped together after all of the other cards have been discussed. The Suits are traditional Wand, Cups, Pentacles and Swords. The Major Arcana also have traditional names.

The card images are done in Judith’s unique way but are also easily “translatable” in the traditional Rider Waite Smith style. I admire this and, in my opinion, make this deck more versatile. Even the newest Tarot reader can read with this deck. This is a “working deck” that cooks and food lovers will enjoy working with.

First the deck, the images are richly colorful, with creative connections to traditional tarot and some visual references even made me snort with laughter. Yes there are the obvious connections to cooking and food but beyond that, many subtle visual metaphors springboard beyond the Rider Waite to provide another wonderful layer of metaphors.
For example, there is the Knight of Pentacles as the pizza delivery man, replete with pentacle on top of the sliced and open box of pizza. Or consider the Three of Wands as a youth crouched at the seaside by a fire, roasting marshmallows and gazing out at a steaming ship, compass at his feet. The Seven of Swords is a woman in prison stripes tiptoeing past sword shape cookies. Here for once we don’t have stiff and upright medieval figures in extravagant costume; rather the Cook’s Tarot offers a welcome break from airy fantasy art and brings us down to our everyday world, the real world of kitchen busyness, chopping veggies or relaxing by the fireplace. Heck there’s even a scene of woman standing on the scales to check her weight—wickedly appropriate humor for the Justice Card! The Charioteer is of course pushing not a chariot but a shopping cart. Since I’m a Chinese horoscope monkey, I particularly appreciated the visual play on words as the overburdened person in the Ten of Wands is not only struggling to carry several bags of carrots, but a there is a monkey on their back—reaching for a carrot of course. Not that there isn’t a good dose of fanciness too; we have the goose that laid the golden egg, castles, blackbirds escaping from a pie and a magically animated Wheel of Fortune.
I also like the inclusionary way many cultural traditions and ethnic appearances are represented in the animated artwork of the cards: pi�ata play (Five of Wands), Jewish wedding (Seven of Cups) and a New Orleans celebration (Judgment), to name a few. The Rube Goldberg chain of events depicted in the Tower card begins with a dog reaching to pull down the tablecloth holding the cooked turkey. In her delicious artwork, everywhere throughout both major and minor arcana, there is movement. The bending, working, leaning and dancing figures are reminiscent of the art of Thomas Hart Benton; each card is a painted mural, a snapshot of lifelike scenes that we can relate to and better connect with.
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then the Cook’s Tarot combines the physical heart with spiritual inspiration to bring out the fresh cooked scents of our own lives, like loaves of bread baking in the oven. Yum!

What does cooking have to do with tarot?

Judith Stirt has a solid knowledge of tarot — historically, psychologically, and esoterically — which creates the foundation for this deck. Her strength as a painter has allowed her to put that knowledge into a visual form which can inspire and instruct. Beginning with the format of the traditional Rider-Waite Tarot, she translated the wisdom of each of those cards into her own symbol system, producing a deck with is loyal to the inherent wisdom of Waite’s revered deck, but which communicates that wisdom in a new, feminine-oriented, modern manner.

The free-spirited, brightly colored, dynamic illustrations reflect her Jamaican childhood. The lessons she attaches to each card image reflect the myriad cooks who oomed large in her life during those early years. I admit that, at first glance, I suspected that this might just be a novel theme applied to a time-tested product. Nothing could be further from the truth. Stirt lived the tarot for six years as she painted each image, sometimes throwing out the first results and starting over until each painting reflected what the tarot had shared with her. Don’t miss this one!

About the Author
June Parsons purchased her first computer, an Apple II+, in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. The next year she opened a successful small computer retail store with Dan Oja that also offered software instruction to children and adults. Dr. Parsons taught at the university level for more than 20 years. She holds a doctorate in Educational Technology and was certified by the ICCP in 1995. Dr. Parsons began writing and creating educational software for Course Technology in 1992. She contributed to the Windows for Business and Illustrated Series and developed the New Perspectives, e-Course, and Practical series. She works via the Internet with a team of highly skilled media specialists and desktop publishers located in various states and provinces.

An esteemed professional and respected author, Dan Oja, along with June Parsons, purchased an Apple II+ in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. The next year, he and Dr. Parsons opened a successful small computer retail store that offered software instruction to children and adults. Mr. Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. Ms. Carol DesJardins spent 25 years in the private sector as a programmer, systems analyst and eventually Chief Information Officer. Ms. DesJardins co-authored her first textbook on Excel. In addition to writing, she continues to teach at St. Clair County Community College.

Poor customer service from the publisher

I purchased this book in order to advance my knowledge with excel. I want to learn more advanced topics using excel.

The text is easy to follow and starts off with the basics (which I expected and I am perfectly comfortable with). The textbook often refers to spreadsheets needed to perform the exercises described in the book. The publisher DID NOT include access to these spreadsheets with the purchase of their textbook.

A serious downside for this purchase has been the customer service from the publisher. I have asked the publisher for help toward obtaining the excel documents three times now (2 emails and one phone call). The phone call lasted 33 minutes and I was on hold for approx. 28 of the 33 minutes.

Their website is NOT easy to navigate for help and my first written request for help was punted back to me telling me to contact another department without providing clear direction for how to contact the other department. I FINELY found a phone number to call. I already described the length of the call above. While they were nice on the phone I doubted the sincerity in their promise in getting me the information I required in order to enhance my training using their textbook.

I STILL DO NOT have the excel spreadsheets required for the textbook and I am NOT optimistic that the publisher will follow through on their promise to me in providing those documents. I have not heard back from them regarding my request for help and/or the status of my request (if, in fact, they are truly trying to help).

Well written, well organized, excellent reference

I've worked a lot with MySQL, over the past few years. I'm completely self-taught, however, and obviously, I've had gaps to deal with. While Google is dandy in a pinch, a book like this really fills in the blanks and provides a far more comprehensive understanding. Granted, if you're just starting out with MySQL, this is probably not the best book for you. Just looking at it from a learner's perspective, you'd better have at least a basic grasp under your belt or this book is going to be a tough one to tackle. If you've got a good background in it though, and are looking to be a real expert in the field, I'd definitely recommend this book. Even if you've already read the second edition, this third edition is definitely worth the purchase as the information is updated and the authors really expand previously presented topics. My overall take: It's well written, well organized and easy to reference when needed.

This is THE MySQL performance book. Period.

Every chapter is very well crafted, with a precise balance between theory and practice, and full of invaluable nuggets, sometimes transcending the MySQL arena and applicable to any database! Such cases are Chapter-Benchmarking MySQL and Chapter 3-Profiling Server Performance, very solid foundations for the reading ahead.

All over the text, authors propose tools, examples of use and proven diagnostic techniques, that will greatly improve your performance firefighter skills and enhance your knowledge of MySQL internals. Nevertheless, what gives this book the five star is taking into consideration the physical part of database structures in play when speaking about performance, which is something most authors don't include; plus treatment on MySQL high availability and cloud features, which we'll increasingly see on customers.

There is something that kind of bugged me at times and was references to a specific commercial MySQL offering and tools, but after taking a look to that company web-site, found that is a great contributor to the MySQL community and you can actually use the tools!

Wonderfully written and the kind of reference material that you don't find lots of days nowadays in the computer book market. For anyone that is a MySQL developer or admin, you will be very wise to pick up this great book!!

There’s something uniquely elegant about this book and I greatly hope others will find the same inspiration I did.

I truly loved this book. As a mother of 2 daughters on the Autism Spectrum I was particularly interested in the last chapter which dealt specifically with this. The quotes from adults on the spectrum who talked about things from their perspective, what they felt, what they were thinking, etc because so many times I would nearly jump from excitement upon finding something that seemed to explain more fully what my children are currently going through. The information in this book is extraordinary and life changing.

The connection between intellectual brightness and social/behavioral difficulty was very enlightening as that is a problem I’m currently having with my 7 yr old who is showing an affinity for science and math. Due to her social skills not being on par with others her age we’ve had quite a bit of difficulty in getting people to take her interests and intelligence seriously. The sentence, “…they failed to see that their labeling of Ethan had also become limiting” could be the mantra for so many children like mine.

This book should be required reading for every caregiver, educator, doctor, etc who has anything to do with someone who has a special gift. It’s long been believed that creativity and high intelligence has a high correlation with elements of mental illness but it’s more than possible what one believes is an illness is just a misunderstood gift, this book rips apart those lines and belief systems.

Gail Saltz is my new hero. She has written a book that will change how we view so many things and thankfully she wrote it in a way that makes the topics interesting and easy to read. I could not put this down, I even had to go back and reread sections to make notes so I could share what I’ve learned with my husband.

Reading this now when we just had a huge Twitter campaign on ridding Mental Illness of its stigma seemed even more apropos. Especially as Saltz strives so hard but with great ease to bring some hope and beauty in an otherwise complex and confusing subject. There’s something uniquely elegant about this book and I greatly hope others will find the same inspiration I did.

The book does walk a fine and contentious line on the topic of semantics

People having various neurological or psychiatric disorders frequently enrich society by virtue of having a distinctly different perspective on life due to nature's allotments. In The Power of Different, Dr. Gail Saltz lays out various case studies in which altered abilities in some mental functions give way to enhanced abilities in others. Saltz makes a successful bid to sensitize her readers to the complexity of human thought and capability. She also demonstrates the potential costs incurred by society if it is dismissive of people whose cognitive abilities or tendencies lay away from the 'norm'. The Power of Different could not appear more timely in America for the waning of social sophistication and compassion in our present-day government.
"Mental illness" as a technical label has little more value than "somatic / bodily illness" for the purposes of description and classification. Yet we see it used exclusively time and again. Saltz rectifies this deficiency by presenting a clearer description of several forms - dyslexia, ADD, anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and autism (she categorizes them in a more sophisticated manner that also includes more disorders than I refer to here). She allocates a chapter for each disorder, making it concise and readable to anyone. She also points out that disorders can and do overlap as would be expected for a networked bodily organ. Her chapters are grouped by symptomatology. She also makes the key point that psychiatric counseling is about the treatment of symptoms - classifying conditions is done for insurance purposes rather than treament purposes.
Within each chapter, Saltz explores creative potentials that can be enhanced by the condition(s) described. She also stimulates productive thought as she discusses "work arounds". She proposes behavioral changes that people, or their associates, can make to cope with differences in abilities and thus enhance the strengths which people possess as a result of these differences.
The book does walk a fine and contentious line on the topic of semantics. What does one call a medical condition that comes about by an aberrant developmental condition and/or genetics and which directly impacts cognitive function? What social repercussions do labels have? The book occasionally comes across as muddled regarding these questions - muddled for its realism primarily but not exclusively.
For example, she refers to dyslexia as a 'difference' as opposed to a disorder. Referring to a condition simply as a 'difference' puts it at risk for lowered medical research and might jeopardize insurance coverage. Saltz discusses dyslexia as a 'learning difference' and she gives the reader a lucid description of how someone with the condition is predisposed to think when reading. But she also tells of some people describing their experience as seeing letters "moving or vibrating on a page." Vibrating letters are a perceptual pathology not simply a difference. Dyslexia frequently afflicts a person concurrently (i.e. comorbidly) with other difficulties, such as dyspraxia which she explains is a difficulty in articulating sounds due to a kind of neuromuscular impairment.
The reader needs to bear in mind that Saltz demonstrates the breadth of the human condition more than reasonable expectations for the average individual with a disorder. Her sampling is openly and also appropriately biased:

I have interviewed multiple successful and supremely creative individuals with brain differences for this book, and in each case I have asked them if, given the choice, they would eliminate their brain difference. To a person - and no matter how much pain their difference has caused them - they said that they would not. Each of my interviewees couldn't imagine separating their strengths from their weaknesses.

This kind of sampling is far from interviewing a person with a condition at random. She does not refer to people who lack supreme creativity. Therefore, using the term "brain differences", as opposed to "disabilities" or "disorders" runs a danger of overcompensating for historically negative views of some people. She points out her focus on exceptional people repeatedly. However, when a reader fails to attend to her disclaimers, they might lose sight of the possibility that not-so-creative persons might find themselves in misery. The fact that her interviewees would retain their conditions could reflect their status as exceptional people more than their status as people with a recognized medical issue. Nevertheless, Saltz carefully avoids romanticizing any condition. As I said, she gives an appropriately biased picture, as one of her intentions is to highlight potential within people having a wide diversity of cognitive abilities. In America, at least, her agenda is imperative.
I have my own biases as I write this critique. I have temporal lobe epilepsy. The history of the disease includes a pendulous swing in status within the psychiatric community, and this volatile status can have high costs for the patient. Decades ago, epilepsy was front and center among mental illnesses. The illness was oddly both comorbid with and caused by seizures. When anticonvulsant drugs became highly effective at reducing or eliminating outward seizures, the disease mysteriously became non-mental. Yet, I can pick out various mental symptoms from multiple disorders that Saltz describes and show them to also be comorbid with temporal lobe epilepsy. Saltz quotes a young woman with dyslexia, "I do better with abstract concepts and ideas as opposed to solid things that require huge amounts of knowledge stored." I have expressed exactly the same thoughts about epilepsy (in an earlier published work) as the woman quoted. I also appreciate points that Saltz makes regarding attentional difficulties and creativity. Saltz emphasizes the power of disinhibited thoughts - the amnesia with which I am too familiar has similar powers (when you cynically assume that you'll be wrong most of the time, you cannot be bothered to intellectually police yourself). Epileptic activity can gyrate a person's focus. Paradoxically, it can make a person hyperfocused as well. Epilepsy, however, is very pathological, frequently melodramatic, and even if it did bring me great success and creativity, I would never pause a moment to be rid of it. But then again, I am not supremely creative either.
Psychiatrists could be routinely treating epilepsy symptoms - as Saltz points out, treating symptoms is what psychiatrists are here to do. Unfortunately, treating the psychiatric symptoms by doctors and receiving reasonable accomodation in the work place has been greatly complicated by the "purging" of the mental illness out of the disease. Today, sufferers are too often perceived as being in a 100% normal mental state when not seizing. That misperception creates social problems. Thus, semantics matter greatly, and the reader needs to critically examine any comment which suggests that a change in terminology is being made for any reason other than a coldly biological one. Such a comment may be very wise, but it needs introspection before quick acceptance. Having a mental disorder can incur stigmatization, but falsely not having one precludes the best care. For that reason, my own attitude is to work to purge the stigma from terms like "disability" or "mental illness" rather than change or discard the terms themselves. Despite our disagreement, Saltz's highlighting of the refinements of other abilities, brought about because of disorders, benefits people with either viewpoint. A person optimally focused on abstract thoughts can make great contributions to an intellectual endeavor, just as Saltz points out.
Saltz tackles supremely complicated issues, facilitating finding bones of contention. However, what Saltz accomplishes with her writing overshadows the points of contention that I raise. Of numerous accomplishments, she a) humanizes mental challenges in a systematic and comprehensive manner; b) provides a text-book knowledgebase that fosters empathy as it informs; and c) poignantly lays in evidence what society stands to lose when we become insensitive to the human potential in anyone.
