Witches, Vampires and Zombies, Oh My!

One year ago Garnet Lacey's inner Goddess, Lilith, murdered a group of Vatican witch hunters after discovering they had killed her entire coven. With the help of her vampire ex-boyfriend, Parrish, she had buried the bodies. Now, with some unforeseen weather issues, the bodies have surfaced. Garnet Lacey's past is catching up to her, leading the way is the good looking psychic FBI agent, Dominguez. He has come to Madison, Wisconsin to investigate the recently discovered dead bodies.

Garnet has her hands full in this, the second book of the series. Along with dealing with the FBI and trying to beat a murder rap, she has some conflict and issues with her current vampire boyfriend, Sebastian; one of those issues includes her ex-boyfriend, Parrish. Garnet has also discovered that the town is crawling with zombies carrying and using really old money.

I wasn't that crazy about the zombie portion of this story, it seemed a little far fetched to me and I had a really hard time believing or buying into it. I think Ms. Hallaway really wrote a tale with a lot of feeling this time around. There is so much going on between Garnet, Sebastian, Parrish and Dominguez, emotionally, and she writes it beautifully on each page. Garnet must come to terms with and say good-bye to her past and there are several heartfelt moments that made this reader weepy.

This was an excellent follow up to the first book, I really enjoyed Dead Sexy, and it was a hard book to set down. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, leaving this reader hoping Ms. Hallaway is a fast writer and will be coming out with the third book, soon. Enjoy!

Enjoyable

Vampires, zombies, and Vatican killers... what's a witch to do with so many supernatural distractions?

Garnet Lacey's life didn't used to be so complicated. However, the slaughter of her coven by the Vatican killers, The Order of Eustace, and her subsequent possession by the Goddess Lilith has made things difficult. Now, an FBI agent is questioning her about those deaths (because of course the Vatican killers couldn't survive the wrath of Lilith) while zombies are littering the town she now calls home. Never mind that her ex-vampire boyfriend, Parrish, is hiding out at her place without her current vampire boyfriend, Sebastian, knowing anything about it! Garnet's got her hands full!

Tate Hallaway continues to blend together romance with a dark fantasy tale. The added touches of humor, such as her familiar cat's allergy to magic, make for a very interesting tale. DEAD SEXY is the second book in this series and can stand alone, although readers will appreciate the relationships better if TALL, DARK, & DEAD is read first.

DEAD SEXY is an intelligent and fast paced paranormal novel with some fun but quirky characters. I liked seeing more of William as he is going through his various phases. However, Garnet herself is the driving force behind the success of this series. Her continued battle between her peace loving former life as coven member Meadow Spring and her current life with Lilith battling to the surface is exceptionally well done. Tate Hallaway's brilliant characterizations make even the secondary characters spring to life in this wonderful series. Just be forewarned....DEAD SEXY ends on a very emotional cliffhanger!

The Wiccan Chick Rides Again!

I was delightfully surprised by this second installment in the Garnet Lacey series. Hallaway has furthered the plot while introducing new elements and new characters to enjoy.

As for our oldie but goodie characters, I thought Garnet and Parrish's relationship was adequately explored and was left at a very satisfying place for me. Sebastian continues to be an A1 HOTTIE and I think it's incredibly brave for an author to continue to explore the ups and downs and growing pains of a relationship, rather than going the easy route and just setting up a different pair of characters. It can't be easy to continue past that first blush of romance, when nine out of ten authors would have just left it at "happily ever after" at the end of book one. I have a lot of respect for Hallaway's decision to continue to explore Sebastian and Garnet's romance. It makes both characters seem more real.

Garnet continues to be the plucky, powerful heroine she was in "Tall, Dark, and Dead," and in this book, we get to see her dive into other paranormal action happening in her world. It's made the whole Garnet Lacey universe expand and I am eager to encounter what new surprises lie in store for Garnet.

In all, reading "Dead Sexy" was a wonderful diversion, and I can't wait to get my hands on Book 3.

This book is a brief survey of Western historical thinking from ancient times to the present and also an introduction to some of the main issues and problems in historiography, philosophy of history, and historical method. It seeks to strike a balanced coverage and to make such concerns accessible to beginning students. Novice historians need to encounter questions of theory in order to grasp the nature of the discipline, but many probably lack the prerequisites to take on R. G. Collingwood straight. This small work may ease the transition.

I want to express my thanks to former colleagues who shared some of these interests, notably George M. Dennison of the University of Montana and Harry Rosenberg, Manfred J. Enssle, Thomas J. Knight, and James E. Hansen III of Colorado State University. D. Great overview

This short book does a good job of providing an overview of Western historical thinking from Herodotus and Thucydides to the modern period. The first chapter is a brief discussion of why we study history to begin with: curiosity, a need to bring order to the world, identify cause and effect, study the identity of a people, calculate the consequences of our actions, and to provide society's memory.

Chapters two and three review the evolution of historical writings and their approach. Gilderhus begins with the ancient historians with a discussion of history in Greece and Rome and then reviews the influence of Christian thought; a paradigm against which history revealed the workings of God's plan. This perspective began to disappear as Western Christianity divided and historians of various religious persuasions wrote histories supporting their perspectives of the past. Enlightenment historians went on to reject a religious approach or even a factual approach wishing to rely on reason for their proofs while at the same time denigrating the past. This gave way to the influence of romanticism and nationalism in the 19th century which led to a more scientific approach to research and analysis. (p. 36) (In some ways this was a reaction to the emphasis on religion and God on man but it could also be a reaction to the renaissance emphasis on the greatness of classical civilizations.)

Chapter 4 then reviews the philosophical aspects (speculative approaches) of history; Gilderhus says there are three schema: cyclical, providential, and progressive (p. 49) and discusses each in turn. Chapter 5 reviews the analytical philosophical approaches to history reflected in the positivist approach (general laws exist that govern the outcomes of human affairs, and idealist thought (which believed that because history was about man, who had free will, history was not repeatable). Chapter six is a simple overview of types of historical papers and research. The last chapter summarizes the state of historiography as it has evolved in the last century.

Entire books have been written about each of the areas addressed in Gilderhus' book; the strength of this book is that it provides a simple easy-to-read overview of the whole field and the thinking behind history.

Good Introduction in Historiography

I have to preface this with the caveat that my graduate-level historiography class was taught by Dr. Gilderhus, though that was several years ago. Then again, he didn't see the need to use this text at that level of study. Where I first read it was in my undergraduate historiography class. The text isn't earth-shattering nor meant as such. As an undergraduate though, I found the text highly informative on the basics of the history of history, its theory and various methodologies. Dr. Gilderhus has come up with perhaps the most elegant, but not simplistic, definition of what history is that I have yet to read. For Dr. Gilderhus, history is "the true story of the human past." It's a definition that works well for the non-history types but still offers something for more advanced readers to unpack. And that's the beauty of this text. It's not meant as a complex treatise on historiography but as an initial pass at the major figures, modes of thought and methodological developments that have brought Western historical thought to where it stands today. For a beginning student or avid amateur you'll find the text an accessible entry-point into historiography. While there are many other texts, such as E.H. Carr's "What Is History?" that provide a deeply nuanced examination of the field, having the basics already laid out allows one to focus on those nuances without needing to look up a name every other page.
I would recommend this text to anyone, even advanced-level history students, who want to quickly grasp the basics of historiography. As any good primer text does, "History & Historians" invites the reader to delve deeper into the topic but still stands on its own strengths. I gave the text only a three-star rating because, as I said, it isn't a masterful and innovative text. Instead, the text is a solid, cursory overview of the field. Complaints about its lack of depth miss the point. If you want complex theory then move on to Hayden White or Lynn Hunt. But as an introductory text it does the job and does it well.

Concise and Informative

An excellent book introducing the origins of historical thought, the changing ideas and methods of history, and the challenges of history in the postmodern era. Also, the introduction provides a great discussion on the importance of studying history. A very understandable and readable book, only 135 pages. I recommend it highly for anyone interested in studying historical philosophy.

About the Author

Richard A. Gershon Ph.D. (Ohio University), is Professor and co-founder of the Telecommunications and Information Management program at Western Michigan University, where he teaches courses in Telecommunications Management, Law and Policy and Communication Technology. His previous publications include The Transnational Media Corporation: Global Messages and Free Market Competition, winner of the 1998 Book of the Year by the National Cable Television Center. Dr. Gershon has received the Steven H. Coltrin Professor of the Year Award (2000) by the International Radio and Television Society (IRTS), and the Barry Sherman Award for Teaching Excellence (2001) by the Management and Economics division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Western Michigan University. Dr. Gershon is a founding member of the International Telecommunications Education and Research Association (ITERA) and served as the organizations first President.

In Soviet times, Russians continued to harbor these two, only seemingly opposed, views of “Gypsies,” exalting their songs on stage but scorning them on the streets as liars and cheats. Alaina Lemon’s Between Two Fires examines how Roma themselves have negotiated these dual images in everyday interactions and in stage performances.
Lemon’s ethnographic study is based on extensive fieldwork in 1990s Russia and focuses on Moscow Romani Theater actors as well as Romani traders and metalworkers. Drawing from interviews with Roma and Russians, observations of performances, and conversations, as well as archives, literary texts, and media, Lemon analyzes the role of theatricality and theatrical tropes in Romani life and the everyday linguistics of social relations and of memory. Historically, the way Romani stage performance has been culturally framed and positioned in Russia has served to typecast Gypsies as “natural” performers, she explains. Thus, while theatrical and musical performance may at times empower Roma, more often it has reinforced and rationalized racial and social stereotypes, excluding them from many Soviet and Russian economic and political arenas. Performance, therefore, defines what it means to be Romani in Russia differently than it does elsewhere, Lemon shows. Considering formal details of language as well as broader cultural and social structures, she also discusses how racial categories relate to post-Soviet economic changes, how gender categories and Euro-Soviet notions of civility are connected, and how ontological distinctions between “stage art” and “real life” contribute to the making of social types. This complex study thus serves as a corrective to romantic views of Roma as detached from political forces.

With Me++ the author of City of Bits and e-topia completes an informal trilogy examining the ramifications of information technology in everyday life. William Mitchell describes the transformation of wireless technology in the hundred years since Marconi -- the scaling up of networks and the scaling down of the apparatus for transmission and reception. It is, he says, as if "Brobdingnag had been rebooted as Lilliput"; Marconi's massive mechanism of tower and kerosene engine has been replaced by a palm-size cellphone. If the operators of Marconi's invention can be seen as human appendages to an immobile machine, today's hand-held devices can be seen as extensions of the human body. This transformation has, in turn, changed our relationship with our surroundings and with each other. The cellphone calls from the collapsing World Trade Center towers and the hijacked jets on September 11 were testimony to the intensity of this new state of continuous electronic engagement.

Thus, Mitchell proposes, the "trial separation" of bits (the elementary unit of information) and atoms (the elementary unit of matter) is over. With increasing frequency, events in physical space reflect events in cyberspace, and vice versa; digital information can, for example, direct the movement of an aircraft or a robot arm. In Me++ Mitchell examines the effects of wireless linkage, global interconnection, miniaturization, and portability on our bodies, our clothing, our architecture, our cities, and our uses of space and time. Computer viruses, cascading power outages, terrorist infiltration of transportation networks, and cellphone conversations in the streets are symptoms of a dramatic new urban condition -- that of ubiquitous, inescapable network interconnectivity. He argues that a world governed less and less by boundaries and more and more by connections requires us to reimagine and reconstruct our environment and to reconsider the ethical foundations of design, engineering, and planning practice.

a humanising trend

To someone bewildered by the continuing pace of technological changes, Mitchell offers calming and exciting insights as to where we might all be going. You might well call him a futurist, along the lines of Alvin Toffler and Herman Kahn. Certainly, he writes gracefully, and does not drown you in technobabble.

He describes the rise of a pervasive mobile networking environment around each of us. Encapsulated for the most part in the already ubiquitous cell phone. It is already been noticed by others that cell phone styling is of importance to some users. It bespeaks a fashion sense about themselves that they wish to proclaim to the world. Mitchell suggests that such attitudes will grow, as some manifestations of technology become ever smaller and more closely associated with their users.

A humanising, and not a de-humanising trend.

A nice book to recommand

This book is enlightening for urban studies in the future. Clearly as it suggested the urbanist shall be (able to be) more sensitive to non physical spaces as well as 'conventional' spatial interventions. However it is also quesionable in what way we can catch up with the fast, unpredictable development of internet (along with other h-tech industries which has already gone far beyond our imigination), a review on the developed network is self-evidently far from enough. In reality internet users,at the same moment,urban space users learn cyber-space by clicking, browsing, online-purchasing rather than reading, apparently it is more effective and empirically more understandable. This fact makes theories about cyber-society more or less, inevitbly obsolete and seemingly less neccessary. After all the book is intelligent especially when it explicitly, or implicitly indicates the interaction (possible interations) between urban space and cyber-space.

I think technology, when used wisely, can do much good. I enjoyed Mitchell's perspective, and I mostly bought the book for artistic reasons and it didn't disappoint.
